We all, presumably, have little sayings or phrases that we have continually uttered most of our lives. Driving around during high school, a bunch of us were bemoaning the situation with finding suitable (ie, any) dates. A guy in the backseat summed it up, saying, "Beggars can't be losers."

Man, I have found a way to use that probably several times a year. The things I'm begging for, of course, keep changing.

Anyone else have an all-purpose or long-time saying that you still keep using?

I always remember something my grandpa used say, he said..."GET THE _ _ _ _ OUT A' MY WAY!"

I use that one from time to time...

"Never compromise your honor, your integrity, or your dreams."

I heard that about 35 years ago and wrote it down on a hand painted note pad that my mom had made. My mom is gone now, but that note pad hangs on my wall and I look at it every day. The paper is a bit frayed over all the years...

    Cheers,
    Doug

I have a sign on my office wall at work that says:

"Please remember to take your beverage with you."

I'm probably messing up the quotation, but I think it went something like "we criticize most in others, that which we despise most in ourselves"

That always makes me stop and think when I want to jump on someone's case.

A lie isn’t the opposite of truth. Ignorance is the opposite. If you’re ignorant you can’t see the truth in front of you. If you’re ignorant everything you don’t understand becomes a lie.

Did you mean to type "Beggars can't be CHOOSERS"?.....or was your buddy named Mrs. Malaprop?
As an adult, my personal creedo has long been The Golden Rule. As corny as it sometimes sounds, treating others the way you wish to be treated REALLY is the best way to go.....not always easy, and sometimes impossible to do, but still a good goal. I always posted it in my classroom before retiring. (it amazed me how many students had NEVER heard it before :()

Maybe I'm not smart enough to get it, JL_LI, but I don't quite understand. Ignorance is lack of knowledge-- a lie is deliberate DENIAL of truth. By your statement, if I don't understand your assertion, does it then become a lie?
I would say a lie is an intentional repudiation of the truth, not necessarily ignorance. Thanks for explaining where I'm wrong.

Most beggars are losers. Very few choosers.

I heard a different version that goes: "We hate most what we envy most."

    Still pretty close.
