Can anybody provide or direct me to a wiring diagram for an esquire with one volume knob, no tone knob, and no switch?

A regular Esquire with would have no cavity shielding, and possibly no ground wire from the bridge. The bridge would be connected to ground through the pickup baseplate and black wire... Similarly, the control plate is connected to ground by direct contact with the volume pot.

Otherwise, any ground wire should be soldered to the back of the volume pot.

Sure, I didn't mean that the string ground is optional, but that any supplementary grounding or shielding would connect there.

Just to be clear: if you are using a regular telecaster bridge and a tele pickup with a metal baseplate, the strings ought to be grounded already.
