I just got a job offer from Wake Forest in Winston-Salem. I will be moving there soon.

Does anyone live in the area, or know of the city and the music scene and general vibe? Maybe the best places to look for a rental when I first arrive?

Sorry I don't. All I can say is - Earl Monroe! Good enough reason to celebrate the area.

Headquarters for Krisy Kreme donuts (if that's your thing) and a lot of really good Thai restaurants (at least the last time I was there about 15-20 years ago), too.
But I can't offer any really helpful info about the area

Good luck with your move. I just got done booking the mover to move to the Georgia/NC border area. I just left University of California but I went to The 'Cuse! ACC baby!

I'm in Charlotte (I actually live in SC, but right over the border.) I work in Charlotte. Go up there all the time (we have an office in WS.)

    Welcome!

Who knows what the music scene will look like when it comes back, but the Triad is a really solid place to live.

Do tell-- what in your opinion is best? I hope its not some sort of drowning in bbq sauce type.

Nothing comes close to Carolina bbq in my opinion.

You think drowning in vinegar is better?
Give me a good ol' Texas brisket or Memphis style BBQ any day.
Best pulled pork I've had was when we did a full pig on the cooker, skin side down, all day, adding zero seasoning or sauce/vinegar. Just the pure flavor of the meat and the smoke.

Foothills Brewery (their original location is in downtown Winston) is one of my favorite NC breweries. My cousin and her husband (both NC natives) lived in Winston-Salem for several years and liked it a lot (he's also a Wake Forest alum). Old Salem living history museum is pretty neat, too.

Sorry, what was your question? :)

Reasonably short trip to Asheville to my favorite (well, 1b now that my buddies have launched their brewery in Raleigh), Burial Beer Company. In fact, Burial is in my top 3 nationwide, I think. Right along with Treehouse outside of Boston.

I'll be in Raleigh in a little over a week visiting another of my NC native cousins. (My wife and I are in Weaverville right now, quarantining for a few days after driving cross country, before visiting my brother and his family in Cornelius). What's your buddies' brewery, if you don't mind my asking?

    Altered State Brewing.
They're still very small scale right now, though, since they all still have to work their day jobs. I.e, no tap room or distribution yet. They are literally about to do just their 3rd release next weekend, March 12-13. For now, they release and you can order online that Friday morning starting around 10:00 am, and they are open to pick up (on release weekends) Friday 5:00 - 9:00 pm, and Saturday 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. Average review on Untappd so far is hitting around 4 stars out of 5 Look them up on Facebook or Instagram for details of that next release. If you're interested in any and can't work out something with your cousin, let me know via private message, and maybe we can figure out a way I can get some for you.

    :lol::lol:

That’s smoked beef, not BBQ. BBQ comes from pigs. Texans seem very confused about this:eek::lol:

Propane is eastern Carolina, not me.

That beef you guys do is delicious, but calling it BBQ is hilarious.

So the op’s moving to Carolina to listen to BBQ discussions? That’s hilarious too.

btw I was born in Texas:)

Pretty sure the 2nd best comment was a Lexington versus eastern style bbq. And if it wasn’t then it missed the boat entirely!

Winston is a cool place. It hasn’t torn down all the historic downtown buildings like Charlotte did. So that area has a lot of charm. The Craigslist up there has some nice stuff from time to time at good prices. You’ll dig it. Congrats and enjoy!
