Hall effect tachometers are routinely available, for cheap, on eBay that are rated for 10k rpm’s ( okay, actually only 9999), but far faster than the OP’s requirements, and faster than anybody I know wants to wind coils. Most automotive ignition triggers, including high-revving performance race engines, use Hall-effect ignition triggers. So Hall effect sensors make adequate pickup wind counters, also, provided they are rated for the capacity you need. Optical works well also, but aren’t a necessary replacement for Hall effect sensors.
