Hall effect tachometers are routinely available, for cheap, on eBay that are rated for 10k rpm’s ( okay, actually only 9999), but far faster than the OP’s requirements, and faster than anybody I know wants to wind coils. Most automotive ignition triggers, including high-revving performance race engines, use Hall-effect ignition triggers. So Hall effect sensors make adequate pickup wind counters, also, provided they are rated for the capacity you need. Optical works well also, but aren’t a necessary replacement for Hall effect sensors.

I've only wound a few pups, so far I've used the same type counter as Nickhofen has. Mine seems to only go up to 600RPM before it's loses count. I adjust my bench power supply maximum voltage to power up to 600RPM speed.

600 turns per minute is fast enough for me at present, as I'm still getting the hang of it, once I get faster I'm going to try one of these.

But until then the more basic counter does the job!
