Will a Roland Jazz Chorus get me this tone?

I think if Danny Gatton had plugged into a JC120, chorus switched off, to play that track, it would still sound like Danny Gatton, and still sound good.

Some may disagree but I think a huge part of how Danny Gatton sounded was more about his touch on the strings, with both hands. Seemed like a pretty physical approach. I think he could probably milk a good representation of that out of any decent clean-toned amp.

Some of his dirtier, more tube-distorted stuff might sound more obviously “different” if he were using a JC120.

Every time I’ve seen a video of Danny Gatton he was plugged into one or more old Fender combos. But I think someone wanting to sound like him would be better off seeking how to do (at least some of) what he did at the instrument; once someone can play at that level getting the exact perfect amp becomes less important.

(My personal playing level is -0.00076% of his; no snobbery intended here!)

    Once again, Danny Gatton amazes.
As the man said, his tone is great.

It's the reverb+ delay ( and probably, yes, a Hollowbody) that seems to be creating that sound, probably ( with Danny, and his love for Fenders) thru a clean Fender amp.
Just my thinking- seems like the delay is the key

In Fall is one of Danny’s most beautiful cuts, and it’s My favorite recording of him.

One thing you can hear in that late 80’s/90’s Danny sound is that he takes a DI line on his archtops. In Fall also has an amp mixed in with the DI signal, and a blackface reverb type amp (Deluxe or Vibrolux) would not be inconsistent. Same sound on Cherokee and Homage to Charlie Christian on Unfinished Business. It’s a Les Paul trick.

My current theory is that Danny used his ‘57 ES-350 on this track. If not the 350, then the ES295. The sound is real similar to New York Stories, which is also the 350 (except for Mike the Cat, which is a Tele)

Danny did use a JC120 periodically in the last few years of his life, especially with his double neck. Probably used on the 6SB neck to maintain the integrity of those extra low notes. His high power twin was prone to catching on fire (as it did during the recording of Blues Newburg). He was seen with a twin clone, the Louis Twinnmaster, in 94 68EB6557-11EB-438D-8B53-1C26799CF007.jpeg 8BAA6E07-BFA4-4D8F-BE12-502A584672BC.jpeg 887D1917-080B-49E1-BADA-A708B9FDDE41.jpeg

Listen to the Variety of tones Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew get from their JC 120 amps
in the King Crimson Band, which is me saying with pedals this amp and your ear you can possibly and or probably get the sound that your chasing.

All I know is that I took a JC120 in trade and sold it within a week to a fiddle player for waaay under market value. I did not want to listen to a guitar running through it one more time. Ommv……and if so, you missed out on buying one of these for $125!!!

Nice cut, barnbustud! I am going to listen to that album….thanks.

Every time I saw Gatton play (I was lucky enough to live in the DC area) he was using a Fender Bassman combo or something similar looking.

    Sheer genius BTW.

mexicanyella, I have my personal appraisal system. If I don’t think something is worth what the market does, I do not invest into it at a level that prevents me from selling below that market for what I think it really is worth. On the reverse side of that coin, I have been known to price certain things over ‘book value’. I have also refused to sell certain things for ‘above market’ money. Foolish old man am I?????

That has to be one of the least amp-dependent tones I've ever heard.

Sometimes things sound funny in my head and seem abrupt and terse once they come out. In case this is one of those, I was trying for “good-natured teasing” and meant no criticism of your decision.

Although I wish it had been me who encountered the JC-for-$125 deal!

does the cleans sound annoyingly glassy or plasticky to you? But yea after reading what Tele 295 said, it does sound dry and direct like a DI.

No no way he cranks it up loud like Danny did live,

But I have the Scotty Anderson Hot licks DVD, and the whole thing he's playing a little solid state PV.

And of course he sounds great.

Danny would sound great on about anything too.

I don’t know what you mean.

I mean - that tone is easily attainable with just about any amp.

ppc, it'll keep up with Kenny Jones & Cozy Powell & Buddy Miles & Keith Moon & John Bonham.

The HIGHEST my JC-40 has gone is
    between 2-3. Normally I'm under 1 - but my Tele's volume is between 2 or 3.

    ...very Soulful...
