Relieved to see this isn't one of those "convince me" threads.

One reason this LP is great: You can feel the freedom of thought, and the fluency of creation.

Start to finish, it was a complex adventure with few constraints. It was a demonstration of creativity. That's worth a lot, but, for most folks, worthless because Don and the band colored outside the lines.

Mine cousin's friend turned me on to Beefheart in 1969. Just always liked his music though "Trout Mask" may be the only one I bought. I met my wife in 1973 and she really loved him, bought all the other albums.

Watched the video and tried to listen to some of the music. I don’t get it. But if others enjoy it that’s all that matters.

The Captain visited the UK when I was a student and played one night in Manchester (probably the Poly)... it was a long time ago (!) but I seem to remember that he was not backed by the Magic Band on this gig, for some reason... Anyway I had heard of these bizarre stop-start rhythms and growly vocals, and arrived with a little trepidation that it might be hard work, but I guess a big bottle of Newcastle Brown made me more receptive (students, tut tut!!) Anyway the concert was wonderful, the atmosphere was good-natured and everybody had a good time. The Captain had an infectious (almost playful) charisma, and the songs just became irresistible and mesmerising once you started to surrender your preconceptions of what music should be...

"Captain Beefheart's voice makes Tom Waits sound like Julie Andrews"... hahah! Good one!

i run hot and cold with him. he's got some brilliant stuff and some stuff where it's like, "okay, i get it, move along."
this might be better for dipping your toes, it's just the "hits" all the way through, and they kill it.

the period where he went "post-punk" or at least, as post-punk as beefheart can get, is also pretty interesting

Well, last year I finally plunged into Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music and found that I loved it.

So maybe I'll give this one a go.

Can't say I'm a fan, but I'll be eternally grateful for the positive impact that he had on Tom Waits.

I always liked a comment That a school friend made on Beefheart 40 years back: “It took me a year to get into Beefheart, but it was worth it”

40 years later l’m still not fully convinced.
