There is a low volt vers of the 6L6 called 6L6GB if I recall. Prob closer to the 5881

Nope, that is really the regular 6P3S, closer to 20W plate dissipation.

Apparently there was also a 6L6 with metal case and Cyrillic L, Stalin era before the standard Soviet denominations.

The original 6L6 was a metal encased tube, though the 6L6G appeared at about the same time. Mid to late 30's seems to have been the time for metal tubes, at least at RCA.

Oh, and a 6L6GB is a 19W tube. A 6L6WGB is a 23W tube like a 5881.

I recall reading that the 5881 was very similar to the 6L6GC but had a different sized bottle. It is good to around 450V without issues. I had US Tung-Sol 5881 in a BFSR without issue for several years. My recollection is often a bit off so IMHO on this.

My take, is modern makers are using labels interchangeably, and in many cases using two or three different designations, on the exact same tube? Unless you actually measure the specifics, you really don't know if your 6L6C is anywhere near an actual 6L6C, and so on. It seems to be a very unreliable field of products, with no pushback from unassuming consumers.

No, a 6L6GC has a longer plate and around 30W plate dissipation. 5881 23W give or take a couple of watts.
