''In the English language of yore, the verb bespeak had various meanings, including “to speak,” “to accuse,” and “to complain.” In the 16th century, bespeak acquired another meaning: “to order or arrange in advance.” It is from that sense that we get the adjective bespoke, referring to clothes and other things that are ordered before they are made. Bespoke has enjoyed a spike in usage in recent years, perhaps due to consumer trends that champion all things artisanal over those that are prefab.''

it is an english word then... I wasn't sure where it's origins were...

Just the newest sales jargon.
Yep, these all used to mean something but endless repetition and incorrect usage have devalued them.

One of my current rants is about the use of 'architect-designed' houses, used as a selling point.
Who else designs houses? Are they cheaper if designed by a proctologist?

Although there are some houses in rural NZ that very obviously weren't 'designed' by anyone, unless they'd been at the 'shrooms.

man.... give it a rest with the 'bespoke' crap please...

sorry... must go yell at the kids on my lawn right now...
Yes - I encountered a woman at work who has been sprinkling this term into her conversations. She says it about 5-6 times in every meeting. I figured she was trying to convey some sort of sophistication, putting an extra adjective in to appear more thoughtful.

Holdover from the days when clothes for the upper class were always custom made.
Until recently it was only really used referring to custom made clothing. Shirts, suits.

Somehow it's been revived to mean anything that's made to order. How about pizza?

Speaking of meaningless, I've seen pizza boxes that proudly announce, "Oven Baked."
Is there some other way to bake things?

Exactly. If I wanted to eat rocks I’d pick them myself.
Are you thinking of artesian (from a naturally flowing well rising from an aquifer at high enough pressure to bring water to the surface) rather than artisanal (made by artisans, in other words craftsmen, thereby implying that everyone else’s is made by minimum wage factory grunts)?
Not saying that either term, when used by Marketing departments, comes particularly close to its original meaning though…

The bespoke surroundings were special, but so was a sense of impermanence — the same group of musicians, cast, and crew will never be gathered after doing that specific shooting on that specific day ever again — that worked its way into the music, too. —Sarah Shachat, IndieWire, 13 Oct. 2024

Guests are sure to appreciate the property’s bespoke blend of privacy and genuinely friendly service. —Sandra MacGregor, Forbes, 14 Oct. 2024

This large room also offers a bespoke bar made of bronze, lacquer, stone, and eglomise by designer Richard Shemtov of Dune, which is beloved by guests and family alike. —Elizabeth Fazzare, Architectural Digest, 11 Oct. 2024
