There is already an instrument that is essentially a violin with frets called a 'viola da gamba' and it didn't make sense to have two. :)

Violin is the dominant instrument of the two because it is much more expressive- you can't do glissando that well on a viola da gamba.

Check out the music of "Fretwork" to hear the Viol- or several of them.

My question is "Why don't people realise that casino's make money from the people that play them (and lots of it, so why don't the people that play them realise that (with very few exceptions) on the whole they are going to be worse off for playing than not?"

I've never understood it.

And i should know that, having

on a Pete Townshend recommendation, only no pics, and no one knows whether it was a full on composition or exercises.

And yes, only the bookies win. Yet as with similarly addictive things, seems it is always about not being satisfied with what you have and the 'promise' of 'better', if you pardon the pun.

Best I can tell about the Casino is its something like drinking. You know its bad but the buzz it gives you overrides the logic part. Like a compulsion.

Why don't Violin's have frets... Hmmm because then they'd be an out-of-tune ukelele :D

Why do calculators and adding machines have a numeric keypad that is in the opposite order to telephones and eftpos machines. The answer is probably just to annoy me

Might have to do with the violins being commonly used in ensembles. Pitch is
better, at least if they're played right. With frets, you'd be stuck with every
imperfect note.

Some gamblers believe the games are fixed. Therefore they believe they can
be beaten.

Also casinos only come out ahead overall. There's always individuals who come
out ahead. Gamblers figure "why not me?"

Probability theory probably has more misconceptions than any other field.

well funny you should ask...I'm making one for my sister for a Christmas present:lol: It has a 12.8" scale, like a Stradivarius, and is made with a cigar box and red oak, I used Stew Mac tall/med frets. To give an idea of the size next to it is a bass uke I'm making my father (20.1" scale) and next to that is a 25.5" 4 string guitar I'm making for me. The violin is dinky 21 and 7/8th's long total:) I've also gotten her a slide and may talk her into going into Sam Ash after the new year and try out an EBow. She already has a Fender FV-3 but this will definately be...different. I wondered why about the frets too, we'll see anyhoo...

At my work we have two credit card machines that sit next to eachother. One has an ascending number pad and the other is descending. For the life of me I don't know why they do things like that unless it's for me to overcharge someone.

I always appreciated the fact that Target would glue o-rings to two home row keys so that their clerks could feel if they were off home row.

I guess at Kroger we used fretless cash registers.

That buzz is easy to fix on the Casino.... Get some clear nail polish and apply it to the screws and retaining wire at the bridge.... oh wait, were you talking about something else?!?! :D

I think most people do realize it. But everybody is different. Some folks are just degenerate gamblers. Some people figure a vacation is going to cost say $2000.....why not go somewhere where at least they have the chance of getting some of it back if they are lucky.....and believe it or not, some people actually win with regularity. But these folks are very few and far between.
I've gone to Vegas at least once a year, usually more, since 1980. Its only been in the last 5 years where I've learned how to gamble effectively, and still I usually just break even. It is NO way to get rich and a great way to get poor.
But it can be quite fun.
