Why does my Nashville middle pick up still work when covered?

    Here's a STRANGE one guys/dolls/everyone else!

I was trying some different color pickguards on my Honey Blonde 2015 Nashville Tele, and I wanted to see how the color would look with a Pearl one, but the only one I had was for a standard Tele, so I made sure the middle pickup was flush with the body, and then attached the pearl one over the existing pickguard by using two of the original screws to secure it.

Well, low and behold, it looks like a 2 pickup Tele, but when I engage the hidden middle strat pickup, it works and sounds fine by itself, or when mixed with either the bridge or neck pickup.

So how in the hell is this possible?

Magnetic force (fields) goes through stuff.

If it didn't, you couldn't hear a radio in your house.

Some guitars--not all--still sound good even with the pickups lowered into the body.

Fender tried this idea in the 1960s (all pickups under the pickguard) but it never made it to production because it was not reliable enough. The model was called the Matador/Marauder.

The magnetic field is bigger than most would think. It might be a little weak that far away, but it'll work.

    Holy crap Batman!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate to bring it up, but I will :)

As my 5 way switch is wired to play the bridge and neck pickups at the same time, does what I just stumbled upon not destroy what many members dislike about the Nashville, and that is that it doesn't look like a "real" 2 pickup Tele?

    Would you have a picture?
Someone else in another thread said they put their middle pickup really low and was able to get an even better Tele neck bridge sound and an improved quack In the 2 and 4 position. So now I’m curious.

Well the neck pup works thru a metal cover, so why not thru a plastic cover/pickguard?

With or without the one hole pickguard installed over the original two hole pickguard?

My beef with the nashville style is that the middle pickup gets in the dang way of my vigorous pick strokes - your solution definitely solves that problem too! I also dislike 5 way switches (too fiddly, hard to get just right mid-song). And the quack sound is useless. But you definitely solved two of the problems with a nashville!

Isn't the logical conclusion of this looking like an Esquire?

The first 3 of the 5 positions work just like a conventional 3 way Tele :)

BTW, what I plan to do is:

    1) Mount the neck pu to the pearl pickguard.
    2) Mount the middle pu to the body.

    Which one?

Simply lowering the pickup or mounting the pu to the body and installing a one cutout pickguard?
