Why do so many young women dye some of their hair pink?

Like a friend of mine used say jokingly of the punk scene in the 80s: "they're such individuals you can hardly tell them apart"

Going by some of the responses here obviously they do not have daughters. My daughter is 31 now, but maybe 15 to 10 years ago she changed the color of her hair almost on a monthly basis. At one point it was so bad she shaved her head because of the damage it did to her hair.Always did well in school and always had a job and now is a chef at a fine restaurant.
She now is sporting the same hair as the lady on Addams family and looks damn good with it.

Each generation has it's own "rebellion" efforts, and they come and go, and often recycle later. One day, the greaser hairdoo's of the 50's may return ;) Having said that, I remember a time when girls that dyed their hair strange colors also wore tons of eyeliner, tattoos, ripped jeans, etc. and were generally ostracized from society and branded as "sluts", where I grew up. Today it's "hip" in the younger gen's but how that changed, and whether or not the original branding holds water or not, is left to debate. However, I will say this, most of the "girl stars" that are largely responsible for this "fad" also perform some pretty explicit er...um... "adult content" in their video's and stage performances so... you be the judge ;)

I agree with it is done to let your freak show and doesn’t hurt anyone. Before I retired I joked with my hair stylist I should dye a part of my hair after retirement to let my freak show. I asked her about it and she said probably not because I would not take care of the dyed part properly. I think she was right. I did not do it but my hair is some longer than when I worked.

I'm also a dad with a daughter, hope I do as good a job raising mine as you did with yours! But back OT, hair coloring is right at #1,945 on my list of worries about raising a pre-teen daughter.

I'll keep that profile photo of the foot only to keep you happy. I thought pink would look better when my silver roots show but that didn't help me get a job either.

Not the drink itself, but the powder. It has so much dye in it you can use it to color hair.

Shoot, when my son was 4 years old, for the 4th of July, we spiked up his mohawk and sprayed it gold on one side and silver on the other. The teenage girls at the parade were all over him.

OP here. Thanks all. We’ve established there is no underlying code to it, it is “just cuz”.

Can't say for sure...but if they're not your wife, daughter, sister, niece, cousin or employee I'd say...none of your damn business.

Pink hair, green hair, piercings, tattoos...I'm a fan of all of it. It's your body, decorate it as you see fit.

I remember when I was a kid in the late sixties, my mother came home one day and her hair had been dyed orange. So it's not a new fad by any means.

So I can annoyingly ask - "is that your natural hair color?"

Sorry, just an old, cranky man here but it really isn't a concern to me.

When enough people say it's "hip" then it becomes "hip"... for the time, regardless of reality or necessity, or long term effects etc. Like bell bottoms in the 60's/70's, which I HATED with a passion then and still do today. Some of the most annoying pair of pants ever designed by mankind right there... BUT... it was "hip" and "Cool" to wear em... regardless of the fact that they got caught in your bike chains if you were not careful, and envariably caused you to do a face plant on the pavement, or crack your choans on the gooseneck.... BUT you looked really cool as you did that! LOL!!! ;)
