Why do so many young women dye some of their hair pink?

Or purple or blue. It looks like it is deliberately partially/very badly done, which is what attracts my curiosity. I see this look also on otherwise quite conventional looking women. Lots of it in London where I am. Is there an urban code to the shade?

I asked my student daughter and she said maybe because it makes them look more rad or hip.

They do it to be different and to rebel.

When my daughter was a teen she came home one day determined to dye her hair blue. When I told her that it was perfectly okay with me she gave up on the idea.

I mean, if it's not going to annoy Dad, why bother?

It's a statement . an expression of rebellion and individuality. fashion, social surrealistic neo-feminist art, dada, a secret code between kindred souls access only on a need to know basis.
    none-of-my-business.

I can recall asking myself that question about blue-haired old ladies when I was a youth.

Pink hair really doesn't annoy me. It's so common I rarely notice it.

I remember back in the day when old women dyed their hair reddish or purplish. It wasn't really strong shades, but young women didn't usually do it back then.

Actually I couldn't find info on that on the net, but I did find a couple of products that seem to pre-date punk:

Because it makes them individual and quirky...well as individual as the other thousands of girls doing exactly the same thing .
Done properly it does look good alas most times its not done well at all.
I suppose here the male equivalent is relicing guitars to be individual and making a pigs ear of it as so many do. The amount of poor abused cheaper fenders and squires these days is staggering . Same thing I guess teenage angst to be different but end up being remarkably the same and a cliché.

I'm guessing its because of social pressures and insecurities, which young women today seem have in abundance.

Why did I tight roll the cuffs of my jeans in college?
I have no idea. Just the style of the day.

My 19 year old niece has purple hair right now.
    It ain't hurting anyone.

We used the term “Blue Rinse Set” when I was growing up .
It was used to describe to old ladies who would dye their hair.
You say the young uns are doing it now.?
I don’t get past the piercings tattoos and implants to notice the hair !

Why do I always feel uncomfortable and/or damn sure of upcoming weirdness/creepiness/incomprehension/ignorance whenever women under the age of 65 are mentioned or referenced on this forum ?
