Given the word's First Nation origins, I'm mildly curious about how the one in the UK got its name - (link removed)

I heard from a friend who recently visited that Portland is a really strange place. He even said the city slogan is "Keep Portland Weird", which is apparently true.

It was named by the guy who owned the land in Durham after he visited Toronto. Apparently he saw some similarities - due to the coal industry in both places.

well, that is kind of true. Portland has all kinds of people. but its the city of roses.
when i was a teen i use to ride the bus system all day just to trip on all the crazy people you meet in a big city. im from the sticks of Oregon tho. so maybe them city folk do not even notice anymore :D

i just assume everyone from Or, WA state are hippies.. and let the chips flys where they fly. :D

Well, it is true. You see that slogan on bumper stickers. Here in Vancouver we have another bumper sticker slogan: "Keep Vancouver Normal." No joke. If you've ever seen the show "Portlandia," it does a fine job lampooning the weirdness of Portland. Those of us from around here definitely relate, especially when it comes to the bicyclists and fad-dieters.

It's probably got a bit to do with most people in the States and other parts of the globe who can't even find Canada on a map let alone cities in Canada.

Are these the same people who think Spanish is spoken in Brazil and that Iranian people are Arabs?

Ontario, California?

when I was a kid in so cal, on the electric television they would have these ads for C&R clothiers and they would say locations in... and list a bunch of cities in the LA area AND La Canada and I was so baffled (as a 10 year old) at why a canadian location was on the ad...

pretty funny! a year or so later, I traveled there and was amazed! a dream realized... beautiful La Canada (lah can yadda)

I lived in Toronto for 18 years, and people from Toronto pronounce it "Torronno." :)
After the Rob Ford and Justin Beiber debacles, there's no longer a need to say Toronto, Ontario, or Toronto, Canada!! EVERYBODY, good or bad, now knows about Toronto.

BTW Oakville is a small town about 15 miles west of Torronno. :)

I have heard a few people, in Toronto, pronounce it (tore-awe-naw) rhymes with piranhas. I'm just happy I don't have to commute there anymore. The 401 from Kitchener to Toronto is lousy with traffic during rush hour.

Why do same people say New York, New York? Even if there is another New York it's doubtful that's the one being referred to. Just a force of habit for some I guess.

This is done to remind those who forget, that New York State is a mighty big State and the 5 boroughs are just a tiny bit of it. In other words, there IS another New York and it is the one occupying the other 97% of the surface area of the State.

We were taught in school (eons ago) that Toronto was an Indian word meaning "meeting of the waters". So where the "other Torontos" derived their names would make an interesting study. I just noticed that my location is given as Ontario, Canada. I should add proudly, Wiarton, Ontario, Canada.

Wow! I did not know that. On second thought, it's stupid of me not to realize that Toronto would have been named for a town in the British Isles. But I did not know that there were towns of the same name in the US of A. Thanks.
