    Hi,

I am 50 yrs old with pretty normal body function / parts etc. (grateful.)

I have been wondering (baring bad accidents / sickness etc) roughly how long I could expect my pinkies to obey my thoughts and play the Tele to a reasonable standard?? (Not a shredder etc)

So - If your older than me, could you please state how old you are while still being able to wield your mighty axe??
I would love to know how long I could 'expect' to keep playing for....as a rough guide.

    Many Thanks,

    Eddie.
    :p

I will turn 56 in a couple of weeks. Shoulder surgery week before last has made playing problemmatic but my recovery is going well and I started to play again last night.

68! Play once a week for fun now and think I am playing just as well as I ever did - maybe a little better. Age is no barrier to playing.

    Good to hear!
I'm 56 and we still play once a week as a band - a lot of times just to play, with 4 or 5 gigs a year.
My left index finger is starting to ache a lot, and seems to be developing 'trigger finger'. I spent a lot of time fingerpicking this winter, and seem to have strained my picking fore-arm - kind of a tennis elbow thing - but on the inside.
I'm hoping that these will pass with a little bit of care and attention...

My hope is that down the road they'll prop me up in a corner at the Shady Rest rest home (in East Texas) with my old Tele in my lap. I don't have to plug in, just something to hang onto.

I don't know for sure how old Bill Kirchen is, he seemed to be playing just fine when I saw him last year.

Edit- just looked it up, and he's a 1948 model. Dude is older than the Broadcaster, and still kickin nine kinds of ass. I'd say you have a few years left to pick, OP!

66, and still playing, though not out very much, damn it.
I am increasingly careful with my hands as I age, but they are still working fine, knock on Telecaster.

I saw Cowboy Jack Clement playing not long before his death. He was probably 80 at the time. He still had no trouble playing clear, powerful, barre chords.

I also know a guy who plays in his church band every Sunday at age 74. He's as spry as ever.

I don't know a lot about arthritis, but if you don't develop it, and keep your hands stretched and dexterous, I think you'll be able to play as long as you enjoy it.

I am also a vintage '48, far from original, however.

Papa Joe was born in 1929, and he may well be the oldest most active player here.

The record says he last posted on April 7.

That means I'm merely a child as I see it, born in the 1950s.

But, I'm somewhat sidelined right now. I smashed my pinkie; big blood blister - my fingers are short enough I've always depended on this finger more than most of you. I should be back up to speed in 10 days I figure.

You can't complain - it does no good at all. :^)

i'm 43 but i had this done at 15. (transplanted shoulder) the day i came home i propped up my pbass on it's stand, got on my knees and started playing. i don't think it's an age thing. i think us players will always find a way no matter what stands in our way.;)
