I have a weird relationship with Who's Next. It came out the summer between my 6th and 7th grade. My older brother got the album and we played the crap out of it. One stupid day in September or October, a half day of school, my buddies and I raided his father's liquor cabinet. It ended up with me "Going Mobile" by ambulance with life rescuing attempts due to alcohol poisoning. The earworm all that day was "I'm in Tune" (I wasn't).

I love that album, but it could've easily have been the soundtrack to my winning a Darwin Award.

I was almost into high school when it was released and it was in heavy rotation everywhere I went for a few years. It’s embedded in my psyche. A coming-of-age thing. Chronologically it coincides with my fixation with dirt bikes. The only Who album I rank higher is Live At Leeds.

I’ve always argued that Bargain’s b-section is the best in rock history.

I bought a USB mic a while back and wanted to test its ability to record a wide array of inputs. Guess which tune I picked! I used it to record everything on this snippet…vocals, acoustic guitar, mic’d up bass amp, mic’d up guitar amp. Pretty decent results for an afternoon’s work. Not record-worthy but I proved my point!

A great album with a lot of fine music.

For me, it's marred by a stupid cover. Wow, how edgy, that you guys urinated on a concrete block. Did you drink a lot of coffee or beer beforehand, to get the best possible photo?
Douche bag!

It's about as good as an album can get.

And I could go for the rest of my life without hearing it again and I'd be okay with that. Not that I have anything against it, but at a certain time in my life it was seriously overplayed.
Same.

Great album. The Who, evolved almost as much as the Beatles. They went from post skiffle, pre-mod soul band, to mods, to psychedelic
‘ish rock, to arena rockers.
The guitar is so powerful yet not that much gain and distortion. Like some of Hendrix’s recorded guitar, it was recorded loud, moving tons of air. Love how Pete used that Arp 2500/2600. I still listen to this album but lately I’ve been getting into their earlier stuff.

Absolutely. Although I loved "Who's Next", I never really appreciated The Who completely. In fact, I ignored much of their music for years. I didn't have much time for guitar for a long period because of family and career but, when I got back into playing in the 90s, I discovered or rediscovered a lot music, including The Who. Now they're most definitely one of my 4 or 5 favorite rock groups of all time.

Who's Next is just about a perfect rock album and easily the Who's best. Not sure there's ever been a better rock lyric than "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

Uh, Quadrophenia is for me the rhythm section apex for rock- just so perfect 🤩
I’ve always enjoyed it too…some *Real* standout performances from Entwistle and Moon. I don’t think Entwistle/Townshend were ever satisfied with the mix though. I believe Entwistle has been quoted as comparing the drum sound to “cracker tins.” I can definitely hear that they sounded different than other recordings I’ve heard of Moon’s; just not necessarily THAT bad 😂

It is a fantastic record indeed. The tone Townshend got from a 1959 Bandmaster and a Gretsch 6120 defies common "wisdom'.

It's 1971, the beginning of my final year of college. Classes haven't started but we're back in town and a group of buddies are riding in a convertible with "Won't Get Fooled Again" blaring on the car's radio. Such memories!

I won't call it a perfect album but it's close. (Prove me wrong!). From the iconic album cover simulating the band whizzing on a large pillar to the incredible song list:
  1. Baba O’Riley
  2. Bargain
  3. Love Ain’t For Keeping
  4. My Wife
  5. The Song Is Over
  6. Getting In Tune
  7. Going Mobile
  8. Behind Blue Eyes
  9. Won’t Get Fooled Again
Entwistle's bass playing is great. I particularly liked his creativity on Getting In Tune. Daltry's voice was never better and Townshend was at the height of his songwriting and playing prowess.

It's easily one of my favorite albums of all time.
Yep, killer album. Bought the CD a few years ago as all I had was vinyl. We used to do "Won’t Get Fooled Again" back in the early 70's. Powerful song, but over time I grew to like some of the others even better. As it often was with LP's. You buy for the hit and like others even better!

I still play on acoustic a fairly accurate version of Won’t Get Fooled…

Was the Townshend solo acoustic version that they played very often on the radio here in the 80’s from Secret Policeman’s Ball/other Ball ?

The kid who first heard it couldn’t believe that the man can even do a passable version of that tune.

Wont Get Fooled Again has the best concert opening two measures in rock. Its that part at the beginning when its just the drums and organ at :39sec.

There is a live version on the 1980 (81?🤔) tour where they let it ride for a long while… I can’t find a video of it, but man did it get the crowd going!!
Saw them at the Cotton Bowl that tour. In the nose-bleeds and still couldn’t get over Petes stage volume.
