In my opinion, he's the only guy who can really be mentioned in this thread, as far as being an incredible vocalist and guitarist.

Richard Thompson would be my number one choice.

One that I didn't see getting a mention yet is Kenny Vaughan. I doubt there is anyone here who would argue against his guitar playing abilities, and vocally he can hold his own next to Marty Stuart. He probably just lacks a bit of the whatever-it-is that makes him a really great frontman on stage.

And not mentioned anywhere near as much as he should be (probably because he is Australian) - Ian Moss of Cold Chisel. Again a wonderful guitarist, and probably a much better singer in a technical sense than Jimmy Barnes. Again just missing a little bit of that vital frontman ingredient.

I like his voice a lot but I wouldn't consider him an elite singer by any means. He is certainly an elite guitarist though!

I didn't read all 11 pages, but I'll throw in a vote for Al Stewart. You immediately know it's him singing and his guitar playing is pretty good too.

I saw Robert Plant on tour with his Band Of Joy a few years ago — his guitarists were Buddy Miller and Darrell Scott, with Patty Griffin on vocals and rhythm guitar. That was a band with a wealth of elite guitar and singing talent — which Plant acknowledged by giving everyone a song of their own to sing while he sat back and provided BVs and handclaps, and appreciative head-nodding.

He was one of the greatest ever, IMHO.

    You don't mean Gregg?
Can't say I've heard Duane sing?

No I mean Duane. He did sing on a few songs but he considered his brother a better singer and songwriter.

I guess be smartest way to approach this is, name some people who could easily be considered guitar heroes, on the merits of their guitar abilities alone, and could separately be considered incredible singers, if they didn't play guitar and were just the vocalist in a band.

In my opinion, most of the people mentioned here could not be placed in both categories.

Interesting opinions . I think "elite" really raises the bar, some listed are pioneers for sure, iconic. But if Prince is considered elite then Chuck Berry probably is not. I absolutely love Haggard and would consider him an elite singer and he did some very cool things on guitar but I would not consider him elite. I think Jerry Reed and Glen were both, as is Vince and Brad (I think he can sing anything). I've seen Joe Robinson a couple of times, super young but I would put him in the discussion.

I didn’t read the entire thread but am shocked Glen Campbell isn’t mentioned in what I read. In the debate for greatest guitarist ever and never sang an off note in his life.

And I’m a Canuck So yeah, Rik Emmett! :D
