Quite rightly, everyone's entitled to their opinions.
I guess his record sales and full venues say enough about his popularity and I'll wager that only a few percent of his followers are guitarists.

Mayer, aside from the trio stuff, is a pop writer. I like his writing and put him in another category from Bonamassa and Emmanuel, both of whom I consider fine players but boring as all get out.

I'm not a fan. I bought one of his concert videos (Muddy Wolf at Red Rocks) and I've tried watching it several times but I always get bored and turn it off before the end. I'm not sure why - I mean, he seems like a good enough player and all but there just seems to be something missing for me.

Others have said it: He can play with great skill, but for me, he doesn’t have the songs.

I think Tommy Emmanuel is great! He's pretty hot with a Telecaster as well as his Matons.

I like his off-stage persona and I think he is an important ambassador of the guitar for the moment. I am not so much into his music. Though there is a part of me that would be really into seeing him in a solo guitar no singing context.

I was listening with my son to some tracks yesterday while grilling a bunch of steak burgers. Some great blues playing came on, very very familiar licks and acuity, had to ask, and it was Albert King and SRV In Session, which I know well, and I saw both back in the day, separately. It struck me, how much SRV borrowed from other bluesmen, and really only refined - plus that indelible strat tone he developed. Heck, he'd tell you himself, without the forerunners, he'd have not been anything. Like Grandpa Jones said in the 1930s, "Everybody sounds like somebody, only different." JB is just trying to sound like his favs, only different.

I have no idea why he gets a bad rap? I can't say he's my favorite blues player. But, his stuff is better than most the other blues out there. His playing is also better than most the Blues players out there.

To be critical in what I like and don't like, I have an internet radio blues station I often listen to. His digs, song openings, are tasty and always pull me in. Then, he starts to sing and his singing just doesn't do a lot for me.

Still, the reality is he's in the upper tier of all the blues I listen too.

How is Joe equivalent to Winwood. Stevie had a hit when he was 18 with gimme some lovin then his work with Traffic, a number one album with Blind Faith, a number one solo hit with Higher Love, a number one album and single with roll with it and multiple top ten albums.
Bonamassa has done none of that.

I prefer Joe Bonamassa, he's much better than Joe Banamassa.

Bonamassa is really good. Do I buy his music? Nah. Just don't have the urge.
Nothing unique or inspiring going on there for some reason. It seems like there should be though.. ?
    Go fig.

Bonamassa (& Emmanuel, ftm) are uninteresting but technically gifted players. With Emmanuel my interest shuts down right at the unnecessary "look at me, I've got chops the Chet Atkins liked" lick. with Bonamassa it's all so curated museum quality blues licks that i can't make it past the first solo, if the singing doesn't get me to quit listening first. but he seems like a decent guy: i enjoy listening to him talk about playing more than i enjoy listening to him play.

Might be a great player but after 3 tunes he sounds the same on pretty much everything.

Different chords but still that flurry of fast notes and doesn't seem to know what a "rest" is.

Joe BonerMaster - sounds hopped-up all the time. A good guy, seems like a nice person but in the end is boring with speed but never aquired much in the way of good taste.

A modern affliction among many guitarists out there.

Like a lot of people have already stated, he's an excellent technician, but I find his music gets boring quickly.
