They were self taught in the pre-internet era and proud of it.

I thought perhaps I was worst solderer in the world, but...

In my defense, I've never had a malfunction yet.

I'm embarrassed to say, that looks a lot like my soldering....fifty-two years ago when I was 18. :)

He studied under me for several years as an apprentice. He is now a directional cable tycoon. You're welcome!

This is what I learned to solder with in Metal Shop class...

Big 1"X1" irons dipped into lead/tin ingots.

    Then they invented electricity...

I'm surprised he didn't give up & try to use crimp connectors. In some person's defense, in order to get better you have to start somewhere. At least a Tele offers easy access.

    Pretty bad.
I was taught and tested to MIL-STD-2000, the government and DoD soldering standards when I was pursuing my EE degree back in the 70's. We were primarily held to this standard because many of my graduating classmates were getting offers from a Rockwell International plant that produced missile guidance systems near Norcross, GA, as well as AT&T/Bell Labs, and Scientific Atlanta, all in the same area. The draft was still in effect then, so my goal was to educate myself to the point that if I were drafted, I would possess enough "value" in the eyes of the military, to not get sent to the front lines in Vietnam or elsewhere.

But if you want to see really questionable soldering, open an early Electro-Harmonix pedal. Mike Matthews set up shop in New York, and hired mostly unskilled, mostly minority, mostly non-union people to build the Electric Mistresses, Small Stones, LPB-1's etc. A large number were also women, largely unheard of at the time. I applaud him for that.
They received rudimentary training in soldering, and they were put to work. Let me tell you, they used a LOT of solder. Need 3-4 wires to connect together at a junction point? No terminals needed, just use a blob of solder about the size of a pencil eraser. Need to solder to the back of a potentiometer? Use a blob about the size of a dime. I still have an original Small Stone, a Electro Harmonix Queen Triggered Wah, and an original Mike Matthews Dirt Road Special guitar amplifier. I've had to fix every one of them a few times, usually due to poor soldering technique, but I wouldn't go into them and improve/clean up the soldering at all. They're real, they're history.

I worked a lot of years in electronics repair and that may just be the worst solder job I’ve ever seen.

Not like the woman that was ironing when the phone rang. She absentmindedly picked up the iron and put it against her head. When she showed up at the ER, the doc asked why she had an iron burn on both sides of her face. She replied, "Well, I went to call 911, and..."
