...when you have a 5 watt amp? ;)

ever since I started playing tube amps it seems that as the time went by, the power of the amplifiers I have been using was always getting smaller. From the 100W Marshall stack and a Hot Rod Deville in the beginning, over the 22W deluxe and a 18W Marshall I went all the way to the 1W Blackstar. The affair with the Blackstar was short-lived, as I have soon built myself a 5F1 champ that I fell in love with. The champ was very good and very quickly found a new home. There's something about this simple circuit and the 8" speaker that make it perfect for practice, and if you mic it you can even play live with it!

Looking for a next one, I got a great deal on an 57 Champ reissue which I still have. Still, I got hooked on small tube amps so I was again looking for a next one. With a bit of luck, I stumbled upon a used G5222 that I got as a trade-in and was not originally impressed with the way it sounded. I loved the way it looks, so I decided to gut it and build a (what a surprise) a 5F1 champ out of it!

I'll spare you the technical details, and leave you to have a listen of a few of my telecasters through the newly built 5F1!

Let me know how do you like it!

Love it. I can’t wait until I clean out my garage so I can have a place to build one.

Sounds great. Amp building is on a long impressive list of things I'd like to learn to do (but know I never will).

5 watts is too loud in my house, especially when my wife is watching Really Drunk Housewives.

I went through a similar evolution as you :).

Even had a 1 watt Blackstar for a while. It was too much of a one-trick pony though.

The evolution continues with my home-made 5F1 and 5E3.

Working on an 18 watt Marshall type of thing right now :).

    Good sounding clips!

Thanks! I still have the 5E3 on my build list ;)

What kind of 18W are you building? The classic 1974x or something custom?

Thanks guys! I really enjoy building these small fun things. :)

In the past few days I actually went on a 5W SE buying frenzy and bought a VOX AC4TV8, Marshall Origin 5C and an another Gretsch G5222.

And since I already have a 57 Champ and a Blackstar HT1, I smell a 8" roundup sometime in the close future. :D

I do like the way the 10W setting on my Boogie changes the character of the amp compared to the 45 and 90W settings, but it's still capable of knocking the dust off the curtains-my NEIGHBOR'S curtains-if I crank it up.
