I heard recently that the two turtles Cuff and Link in the movie Rocky that he bought from Adrienne's pet store are still owned by Stallone. They're over 40 years old now.

If I move South enough where it's warm enough to keep them outside most of the year I'd like to adopt a Sulcatta tortoise. I'm allergic to grass, and my wife has agreed we can get one to use as a lawn mower.

These are our RES. We've had them for around 14 years now. They're kind of lousy pets, but they're not hard to care for. They were our son's, and then they became ours, and now they belong to the cat. He spends hours every day watching them.

Love turtles and tortoises! My wife and I keep an eye almost daily on our local Gopher Tortoises as we ride our bikes on the state forest bike trail near our home. Lots of their burrows to be found next to the trail. Since we live on a small lake, we often have female Peninsula Cooters (large freshwater turtles) come up into our yard to lay their eggs. When we spend time in the U.S. Virgin Islands we're always excited to see the Green and Hawksbill sea turtles there.

The photo below was taken at Shark Valley in Everglades National Park. This Florida Soft Shell Turtle was basking on the bike trail there.

We have a Mississippi map turtle, rescued from the science class at the grade school. Daughter quickly lost interest in turtle chores so I am now the turtlekeeper. He would prefer it if no one ever came too near and nothing ever moved suddenly, but he does know when it’s feeding time and he’s ok with me then.

My wife and I were, for a while, in the habit of taking long walks down a certain route near our house. Part of the route is over a bridge over a creek. We always stop to view the turtles. They can be hard to see, hard to tell them from the rocks they are sunning on until they jump from the rocks into the water.

We haven't been to that bridge to view the turtles since Hurricane Ida. I certainly hope the turtles came back.

When I was growing up there was a store or two in downtown Monroe, Louisiana, that sold small turtles. Kress, Woolworth's, Morgan and Lindsey, can't remember which. We never did buy one.

I have both a painted shell of an Australian Long Neck Turtle and an Opal mounted in a gold Turtle of the same species that is both chain mounted and a pin . I commissioned the pendant/pin for my mom after returning from Oz , but she passed before it was completed . I wear it around my neck in her memory .

We have big ol Snapping Turtles here in New Jersey. They are big, bad, mean, dangerous and delicious!

My dad used to catch them. He's wrestle em in with a trolling rod set with half a blue gill on a shark hook.
He had a guy, that would come get them, then a few days later he would bring half of the meat back for dad to make his locally famous snapper soup with. It was phenomenal.

His biggest was 47 pounds. He swore there was a fifty in our lake but he never got him.

We only eat the snappers. All of the other breeds are safe.

    Brings back sad memories.....

Had to be over 20 years ago we had a bad drought and there was a pond down the street that was dwindling daily

You’d see turtles crossing the road trying to make it to the unknown on the other side seeking some moisture

A lot of good turtles fell victim to the heinous automobiles

It’s hard to tell how many turtles lost their lives that summer......

Sounds silly but I’m serious, I was a sensitive child, still am to a degree, well.... at least empathetic towards animals

It is strange the empathy one can feel towards beings not of our own kind. When I was a young man, I lived up north where a monumental flood has occurred. Fish that were in the streams gathered in small pools when the streams dried up, and were trying to breathe through their mouths. There were far too many to rescue, nature at its worse.

I've seen many turtles run over trying to cross the Interstate going east to west - but if they had chose to walk north to south they could have walked from Maine to Florida and never seen a car ...... I think that there is a lesson there .
