On those occasions when I like to “uncork the magic” I reach for my Medallion. 094735A2-9079-478A-BC96-A4017B8C41D9.jpeg

My Mom gave me this when I was 10.
We had just moved here (Austin) from my home state of South Carolina, in 1967.
I had started swimming lessons, and Mom thought St. Christopher would help look after me.
55 years later, he’s still on the job.
The medal is my most prized possession.
It ties me to her.
I’ve broken, lost and replaced the chain many times, but not the medal itself.
It and the chain are sterling, like my Mom’s character.

I bought a gold chain with a silver 1715 Dutch 6 Stuiver coin pendant at a shop in the Caymans.

I wore it for a few months...never liked having anything around my neck or on my fingers. I guess that's from being raised in a machine-shop.

I lost my wedding ring 15yrs ago...never replaced it.

I tried the gold chain thing back in the '80s. 16" chain was nice and loose. Then I worked a summer as a parking lot sealer guy, lifting 100 pound bags of silica, carrying 85 pound buckets of sealer in each hand. For some reason, my chain shrunk and became a choker. I already hate buttoned collars and dislike anything around my throat. I'm just not much of one for wearing jewelry. In spite of how much I wish I could be like this guy:

Not here
Nope.

Wedding ring drove me nuts while I wore it.

I can't even wear a watch.

My blade is always there when I reach for it and I have come to grips with belts.

Personal aesthetics have really lowered in value as the world turns for me.

Loose Silver chain, gift from my wife, have worn it for years. Take it off when bathing, but not for showering.

I never took my wedding ring off for 12 years until last week when I have had to have it made bigger - super weird not to have it on. It'll take 3 weeks to change (!) and I'll be gald to have it back (and avoid the OMG I lost it moments!).

Also wear a watch all the time, without fail.

Wedding ring and a watch, and since a holiday to Marrakech last November a brass bangle with rosewood inlay. I like it, but it's early days and it might pass!

When I was a kid I really looked up to a guy who wore a St Christopher medallion. Someone - perhaps him? - bought me one and I wore it until I was 30 and got married for the first time. Just after we got married my new wife asked me to stop wearing it "now that we're married" because when it touched her when we were in bed she thought of all of the other women it had touched!

Fair enough. I still have it, but haven't worn it since.

In Marrakech - in the moment! - I also bought a necklace, a Berber "compass". I bought it on the basis that maybe if I wore that I wouldn't get lost in life again. To be honest, though, I feel too self-conscious when I put it on, so I don't wear it. And the chain's a touch too short to be comfortable as well, though of course that would be easily fixed.

@Swirling Snow - that took me a minute, and then made me laugh!

i've never been able to wear any kind of jewelry, not even a wedding ring or a watch. makes me very uncomfortable. i don't know why.

when i was a kid, a cousin of mine punched a horse in the mouth and caught his wedding ring in the horse's teeth and stripped his finger. maybe that's got something to do with it. but i doubt i'll ever punch a horse.
I have worked with a few who lost a digit because they were wearing a ring. One guy caught his finger on the rim of a basketball hoop in a pick up game, mechanics. Had the same effect on me. I have not and will never wear a ring.

I've worn a small link gold chain in the past, but stopped. I like bracelets better. Only have one, a silver chain which I wore about 5 years straight until a weld on the clasp broke. It has a rather heavy medallion with the crest from the House of Matthias (past king of Hungary and Croatia), which through some long ago relative I'm supposedly part of.

My late father once told me that '...you look like a f'king Xmas tree...' - this would have been in the early 80s. He had a point...perceptive dude, my old man.

These days, I just have a simple silver pendant on a leather bootlace around my neck. It's not visible unless I'm shirtless, which doesn't happen outside the house anymore.

It's been there for over 30 years now, and was only removed once a couple of years ago to change the leather for a new piece.

When I was in 6th grade, I wore a medallion on a chain.

Over my Nehru shirt.

(It was 1968)

I no longer wear any chain nor do I have any Nehru shirts any more.

(Does anyone still know what a Nehru shirt is without googling?)
Is it that fake velvet like stuff or the polyester with the big collar?
