I play my guitar straight into the amp, and love the fender spring reverb sound.

Now please don’t judge me, but have 9 different reverb tanks, (TAD, Ruby, accutronics, surfy bear) all are 4ab3c1b tanks.

I reasonably bought a early 90’s Cary accutronics 4ab3c1b reverb tank, and the decay time is much shorter then the modern equivalents, I find that I can turn up to 8-10 without it being overpowering, (the modern once gets overbearing around 6-7) but the sound and its blooming high overtones in the midrange is really amazing

I have two questions:

1. Who else like to turn the verb up that much ?

2. Am I pushing the tubes, or the reverb tranny to its limits causing excessive ware by going up that high ?

Amp is a 63 vibroverb reisue.

Thanks

Oh yeah - I must have ‘verb. I don’t use excessive amounts to wash out, but like reverb nearly all the time. I never got the “don’t need ‘verb because cab’s natural resonance…”. I’ve never heard a cabinet’s resonance sound like actual reverb. Of course I’ll turn reverb down or off if the room is cavernous with echo off the walls, etc. I’m currently using digital reverb by circumstance in the amps I own but have played Fender spring reverb for years and love it.

I always have Reverb on, but not a ton.
And I prefer at least Fender Spring style, whether it's real or on a pedal, which I also have ( cheap)
Everything I play is old rock and roll, cleaner blues,or country rock/Dead, and there was always some kind of element of Reverb in that sound.
So usually I go for a 'Fender BF amp Reverb on '3' ' kind of sound- but I will turn up for Surf stuff, or old Chicago or jump blues.
I use teeny SS amps, but they put out the right sounds, with real springs!

I've got a 1965 tuxedo reverb unit that I use with tweed clones and my old AC30, but I don't crank it up to surf levels. I also regularly do the common replace the one meg resistor that sets the dwell level wide open, with a pot on other peoples Fender amps with built in reverb. TDPRI member RobRob has all the details on his excellent website. I highly recommend it for really being able to fine tune your reverb sound.

Love me some spring clatter.
None of my amps have reverb, but I do have a Danelectro Spring King. That thing can clatter and chatter.

If you're worried about your amp, the Surfy Bear is a solid state interpretation of a Fender-ish external box. I covet the Surfy Bear.

As you're within easy shipping, https://www.tubetown.net/ttstore/en/tt-kit-surfmate.html

Any excuse to post this :

I don't think you're risking anything ampside, but if you want the crashclatter, maybe better to have something external.

While I am now gigging and practicing with my TMDR that has a digital representation of the Fender spring reverb, I don't really like a "dry" sound to my guitar, so reverb is always on. I don't "surf" so reverb level is enough to give depth and wash to my guitar sound, but not so much as to lose note definition. When using Fender tube amps, the reverb level was usually around 4. Because the TMDR's reverb tends to be somewhat deeper, levels around 3 serve my sound nicely.

I always start dry to hear the guitars and what they sound like , I like to blend the guitar into the effect to what the song requires, hence I don't use a lot of pedals

Reverb for guitarists is different for reverb in than studio application .
for the guitarist it's an effect to wet up the guitar signal and like Vibrato it can add a dimension to a song , how ever some over use it on every song.

Chet Atkins would Play dry but would put reverb into his monitors so the sound he heard could be added post recording.

in the studio it is an effect to create a specific SPACE with calibrated reflections as convolution reverbs where the measured reflections algorithm is applied to a reverb to simulate a given environment , example to sound like you are playing inside the Taj Mahal or Westminster Abby with extreme accuracy, this is a little more exacting on the primary and secondary reflections and allows for an incredible added space.

the Lexicon 244 reverb took this one step forward ( just listen to Roxy Music Avalon , with good head phones ) OMG the engineer placed the instruments in a spherical 360 degree environ where the guitar is exactly 10 degrees to the left and 6 feet away from your point of listening then did the same thing with the drums and bass creating a sonic hologram. way too cool!

I don't have a Fender amp but all my amps have spring reverb, so for me thats enough. I like the vintage things, analog sounds etc. A simple spring reverb and a BBD delay and i'm damn happy with.

Now about how i usually use reverbs, mostly of the time around 3 to 6. But, sometimes i push it more.

I don’t judge you - it’s only a small collection but I’m sure if you keep going you’ll get it to double digits at some point 🙂
I love my SurfyBears and Topanga actually more than the spring reverb in my Princeton Reverb - I love the push they give the amp, and it’s a kind of more substantial reverb sound somehow.
Anyway, La Luz…

100% agree, right now amp is set ud in a very dampened room, so overall dound can handel tge amount of reverb I use, in a reflective room it would properly be too much of a good thing.

Well you got me there, in fact I like the old accutronics tank so much, that I ordered another one from eBay, and it’s on its way right now for tge collection god forbid that the one I have breaks and I am without that sound 😁

I not really a surf player, so the vibroverb with that tank covers my needs, but have heard nothing but praise for tge surfy bear units.

Nb! I also have the new surfy bear tank, and it’s the closest to the old accutronics tank, but what I like most about tge old accutronics tank, is that you can turn it way up and reap all those overtones in the midrange, without the decay mushing the sound up.

Not sure who makes the reverb tank in my 64 Hand Wired PR? I've had a few Fender amps, all with Reverb tanks, and a couple of Mesa - not sure the make of that tank? - and a couple of Swart amps, also not sure who makes his tanks. I leave the reverb on my 64 al the time, though it's not anywhere near surf. I've got Catalinbread Topanga reverb pedal that seldom gets used with my Deluxe. It's just not the same as what's in the PR.

The only time I may ditch the verb is if, for some reason, I am running allotta distortion/effects - which is rare. Mine usually sits at about 4. However, most of my playing is on a drip edge Vibro Champ, so I use a FR-1000 upstream. It is solid state, so no tube worries. Great setup. I basically play clean, but don't like sterile. Plate reverb on a pedal is OK, but a little too harsh IMO. I always come back to spring verb. Always have been a long, 2-spring addict.

I use the surfy bear compact along with the on board fender reverb. Gives me 3 different levels of ‘verb plus bypass without needing to twiddle any knobs. Also have an old silver face reverb unit that does huge ambient sounds without washing out- but doesn’t really do the drip at all. Some amount of fender type reverb on 99% of the time.

Accutronics moved to Korea around 2010, and ever since then, the sound nothing like the US tanks, its night a day difference.

It’s mainly the decay that is much much longer, and yes the also sound thinner.

Why that is I don’t know

I've always wanted a Fender Vibroverb amp. Had to go with the #2 on the list, my Peavey Delta Blues 1x15 amp.
I always use some (spring) reverb & tremolo in my sound and it delivers what I need.
Still, one day Ill probably build myself a Vibroverb amp.
