Who does not really care about their sound ?

I am always amazed at guitar players who have a bunch of pedals. Not so long ago i was just playing with the crunch channel of my peavey bandit, and switched to a clean sound with delay which actually acts as a distortion. If i turn all the settings down and then up, i might notice a difference. Otherwise it basically sounds the same to me. I do notice it on the gain distortion channel though. I am not dissing people who can hear the difference though. I just can't.

I seriously don't hear the difference, to the point i was thinking those are just dummy settings, you can turn them up or down and it won't change a thing. Or maybe fine tuning a guitar sound is just not my thing.

I do admire people who make tasteful use of their gear though. It certainly adds a lot. I would be good with a tremolo, clean sound, delay and reverb. I don't have a tremolo pedal, but i might want to try one to get that swampy sound. Any donner tremolo pedal ?

Well at least it keeps me away from GAS. I do tend to buy stupid pedals on impulse, just to see what they sound like.

I have a simple tremolo pedal that I adore, but if I was in the market, I’d pick up another EHX Stereo Pulsar. Fabulous pedal if one wants to get freaky with tremolo .

some days I can hear and appreciate the tiny little granular corksniffery details of subtle difference, and that all adds up to glorious tone... and some days it just all seems to sound pretty much generically the same no matter what

I have about 8 pedals hooked up, but not engaged. I play clean with amp-supplied reverb. I would use the pedals more, but it is hard to stomp them from my recliner.

Well if you rock back and forth on time it means you can have 4 pedals hooked up. Though it will be hard to get some of them together since they work by pairs under the rocking chair. (lyrics spotted here ... would you please rock me back and forth /and slide my chair sideways / so that my delay pedal goes on with my distortion channel). I am not good with words though.

That would work, but I literally play RECLINED - with my feet up! It doesn't rock when reclined. I can reach over and adjust the reverb on my FR-1000, but that's about the extent of it. I have learned to live with a nice clean tone. It forces me to play clean as well.

Oddly, the most recent pedal I bought was a cheap wah-wah!!

I once forgot to turn on a drive pedal that was "required" on a song.

After we got done with the song, the band leader said, "man that last part where you were pushing it sounded great. I told you that drive pedal would do wonders."

I was actually pushing the tele a little bit through the amp. I did not have the heart to tell him I forgot to turn on the drive pedal.

I care, but I don’t obsess about it.
I concentrate more on what I play, how much I play, and how it fits.
I learned long ago that being a sideman is about keeping everyone else in the room placated.
The venue owner, band leader, band mates, sound man, and audience all get a say in my precious tone.
If I were the focal point/leader/“star” of the show, I’d probably obsess more.
Luckily, in the last dozen or so years, I’ve been completely happy with my sound.
P.S.
I haven’t stomped on a pedal at gigs in the last dozen years.
The effects I need are in the amp, and I use them (chorus, delay, tremolo, reverb, phase shifter, octaver, and amp simulator distortion) sparingly and (hopefully), judiciously.
Pedals are a hassle waiting to happen, IMO.

I have thoughts about doing it, not making fun of you, but playing in a recliner hawaiian music. That would be a first. And if you steal it from me, make sure it is a shooting stars night, and play the music to the sky.

Now that i think of it this would be a pretty cool concept if you are recliner bound ! I don't know where you live in new york or if the pollution makes it possible though.

I CARE....and that's why I use effects VERY judiciously. I am so sick of guitarists who buy TERRIFIC (and expensive) guitars and amps.....then step on a bunch of pedals and turn their sound into a fuzzy, buzzy mess. I've mentioned this before, but I'm proud that I've gotten compliments on how my guitar sounds (nothing to do with ME, I guess) when I've used no or minimal effects on a gig. Sometimes on stage a player just can't tell how his pedals sound out in the audience.......but that's just me.
P.S.....and to your trem pedal question, I have a Donner Golden Tremolo pedal that sounds just great.

How old is your Bandit? There were a few years in there (late 80s, solo series) where the EQ controls were bypassed when you switched to the dirty channel. The signal had a preset EQ curve and the controls left active were pre and post gain, and presence.

But you could adjust bass/mid/treble on the clean channel.

My ex-bandmate with the 1960 Tweed Tremolux who puts a very mediocre pedal board (with a flanger ) in front of it - on the two times a year he drags it out of his basement.

The last time he used it, it was for a small backyard gig, and he called me up later that week, and said hey, I used the old Fender (I make fun of him for never using it) but , then he said , complaining - “that thing is all midrange !”

I said, imagine that , a fender tweed amp that’s mid range-y !

That guy? Doesn’t care about tone…

I’ve never been all that much about tone. I’ll care about certain effects if I need them, but just the broad categories. I’ve never been one for “oh this company’s plate reverb has a better swell blossom than this other one” or whatever other made up sounding terms people stuff into YouTube infomercials. I mean YouTube gear reviews.

I do care about sound. I actually play guitar just to make sounds. It's 100% of the reason I play any instrument.

I heard someone I don't remember quote someone they didn't remember, who apparently said "no music has ever been better than it sounded". I agree, with whoever it was.
