i bought a vintera tele a couple of weeks ago and it has bumped all my others. this is the only one i want to play these days. this will not last forever, but i am really surprised at how much i love it. i do not know altogether what everbody else wants in a telecaster (yes, twang) but this thing has this ringing quality that i am getting addicted to. i know that the bridge pick up is supposed to be the main thing, but i seldom use it - i have only ever owned one telecaster that had a good bridge p-up sound. (or what i think of as a good sound)

so i am thinking all kinds of things about telecasters. can i play hendrix and robin trower on a tele? i don't see why not. what about doobie brothers? sure, it works. black sabbath? well, with the right add ons, the right pedal and amp, possibly. steppenwolf? sure, most of their early stuff was an esquire.

so i would like to know if anyone can tell me about some obscure but good players who used primarily teles. i know about terry kath, jimmy page, keith richards, albert collins and all the great country players. i also know that Funk #49 was recorded with a tele. but who else used one in the blues, rock and blues rock world?

Wilko Johnson springs to mind. Really a different side of the Tele, and someone who made me take notice of the instrument

yes, i forgot about Wilco! he is one of my favorite players ever, he did it his own way and that is very admirable to me. NOBODY else plays like he did.

yes, my local library has a book "the Grail Guitar" which is all about the telecaster Jimi used (maybe) for some overdubs on the first JHE album. i don't think he used a tele much beyond that.

i did not know johnny thunders ever played a tele.

I am an unconventional Tele player. I ignored the Tele for most of my guitar-playing life. Now there is not a genre I cannot butcher on the Tele - blues, rock, polka, funk, country, you name it! Hate jazz but I could also probably do a poor job of that.

well, Controller, we can always take consolation in the fact that with a tele, we look good doing it, however bad it turns out.

So true, I certainly can't fault the guitar in this business.

Although he's known mainly for using a battered gold top Les Paul, Gary Green of Gentle Giant at times played a Telecaster live. I don't know about recording, but he's pictured on their live double LP "Playing The Fool" with a Tele.......about as "un-Tele" a guitar player as you can get, but, as has been said, you can play ANYTHING on a Telecaster.
Edit.....Gary's Les Paul was NOT a Gold Top.....it was a 'Burst. My mistake.
