Frank’n’censed, your post inspired me to DVR the last half hour of regular play and I started watching right before Croatia tied it. I don’t know the game at all other than a few basics so didn’t understand penalties or ‘stops’ or anything else except scoring. It was quite a match, the skill and endurance of the players (no time outs?!?) was impressive and my condolences to the UK fans and props to the winners.

Off to France tomorrow, planning to watch a couple of pave sections on Sunday's Arras to Roubaix stage of the Tour de France. Finish is about a half hour prior to kick off. So we will still try to watch the final in a bar somewhere but won't be the same. The third place play-off (England/Belgium) overlaps Saturdays' stage into Amiens. If the reports are good I should watch it on catch up when we get back to the UK, but won't worry about seeing it live. Radio 5 has Wimbledon on Saturday afternoon, but broadcasts the final on Sunday so we have a fall back if we cannot find a bar showing the final.

Four years ago we were in Koblenz on the night of the final. Watched it live from a table on the terrace of an Italian restaurant, that was quite a night. In 2006 we were in France for the France/Italy final, and we hardly knew it was happening, hoping for something better this time around.

I saw it and was surprised that England seemed to think that they could bypass the Croatian midfield by just hoofing the ball downfield and nullify any threat by using Harry Kane as a makeshift attacking midfielder.

After the goal, the Croatians worked out how to get the ball in behind a three central defender back line and scored. Did England have a plan B? No.

Don't get me wrong, I'm proud that England got to the semis and I'm sure they'll improve ahead of the Euros in 2 years. However, they need to be a bit more adaptable when things stop going to plan.

Missed that one watching Wimbledon but we'll be watching the final live in the basement theater! Go Croatia!! My wife is Bulgarian so I've gotta root for the Eastern European team, which I would have anyway. Love an underdog.

Well... seems that I wasn't the only person watching it live, during the middle of class.
