Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa...as long as these kids can play it on a tablet, they are happy..not much interest in actually learning how to actually play a real instrument...SAD!!!

One of the two bands my 17 year old bass playing son is in will be playing their first club gig (at one of my old haunts) tonight. They've already played a few backyard parties, youth gigs...both bands spent Christmas vacation recording, with an eye on releasing the recordings in the next few months. Both bands are guitar oriented: one more in a R.E.M./Strokes vein, the other more Radiohead/neo-prog.

So, they're out there...at least in my neck of the woods.

Cool. I know lots of young musicians.

On a serious note, kids who buy guitars and care about rock apparently don’t have time to change for the gig after gym class.

And also I don’t care for “real instrument”. If someone spends 6-8 hours a day working on creating music, it’s a real instrument.

I guess we can all ask ourselves.....How many kids have you encouraged/taught to play guitar?...

guitar kids don't just appear out of the woodwork..;)

One for now, my 11 yo :) My older son could not care less and listens to guitar-less sounds, yikes. I have some hopes for one of his friends though who at least knows who EVH was (I am taking both to see Wolf Van Halen in March).

My 11 yo saw Steve Vai and Joe Bonamassa in fall and we are headed to see Eric Johnson in a month. Then Metallica and Pantera and Wolf Van Halen 3-in-1 event in fall. Even my wife will join for Metallica, lol.

Guitar playing is taking a beating, I've seen Hendrix level players on the street corners playing for change and no one gives a rip. Pretty soon we will be seeing homless guitar player with signs "will play for food" as someone who came up when there were still guitar heros being made, it saddens me. Guitar is such an enjoyable instrument for the player and if he/she is a good player the audience gets to share in that joy.

I'm realizing why I see so many cats in worship and praise bands, its one of the last places that appreciates guitar playing. (NOTE: Not judging or trying to start a religious discussion, just a respectful observation. )

I do believe there will be a rebellion at some point, maybe younger gen z or gen alpha will get back to bare bones guitar rock and it will be like punk, rockabilly or grunge as they give the finger to their Ipad music based parents. It will be a truly wild fun time! I will be to old to enjoy it first hand but my kiddo has the opportunity to be a guitar rebel some time in 2032

You have to look at it from the perspective of sufficient drive and maturity to monetize the skill. A player with adequate skills on guitar and good interpersonal/team skills will do a whole lot better than a player who flat-out shreds but can't show up on time for band practice.

I've seen some amazing buskers that otherwise should be famous. There's usually a pretty good reason they aren't.

I pass through the instrument showrooms at Sweetwater pretty often. The people trying out instruments are all ages, with a significant proportion of young sprouts. Whether they're buying or not I don't know, although at least a few seem to be completing purchases.

There are some younger guitar players at their open mic, too - though mostly the younguns are singing to backing tracks.
