So a butterscotch tele, with a blackguard, with a tortoiseshell pick is the best combo? What about mother of pearl picks, are those alright?

It pretty much depends on what sound/tone you're after.
The "mother of pearl" pick choice would sound a bit clammy I think ;)

So, how has your tone aged using the various colors? Have you found out if any particular color opens up more over time?

your unobtanium diamond jewel light faceted in an asher cut (old world) color matched to your guitar is the only way to go. The synergy between the jewel and guitar will get you the best tone, sustain and clarity. Remember all jewels are measures on CCC and the best grade of all three will be heard.

My 65 Bandmaster has the standard red light and it is one of the finest amplifiers I have, which is saying something. However, I think I prefer blue. I can’t even remember what the silver face Pro reverb color is now. It is a little more sterile than the bandmaster but is still very colorful and the tone controls are super interactive

While I haven't read the entire thread, I stick with red because of the versitility. I mean sometimes I uses Les Pauls and Strats with the same amp...I just don't have time to change jewel lights in a live performance between songs. They may not sound the best but sometimes you have to compromise.
