Brian May - you can tell it's him in ONE note.

SRV, Lonnie Mack, Albert Collins, late 80's Clapton, Albert Lee, Vince Gill, Danny Kirwan if he shakes it, Jerry Reed on nylon string, BB King.... I can figure all those guys out in ONE note. Just one. Instantly recognizable. All these guys have what I consider "good tone". Guys like Brian May I can pick out, but to me that's a terrible tone. Having bad tone is easy to pick up on, it's like a bone chip in your mouth when you're eating something soft!

The high gainers like Yngwie/Satch/everybody today, I can't tell one from another. If they use a Marshall stack, I can't discern one from another. A lick, sure. But not tone. EVH and RR in the old days yeah, but nobody else.

David Gilmour, B.B.King, Peter Green and Brian May are amongst my 'easy to recognize and enjoy', along with Wes Montgomery of course.

Robbie Krieger. And it is all him, not the guitar he is playing.

Ty Tabor, from Kings X’s first four albums, all day long. His Strat Elite/Lab Series L5-as-a-preamp/power amp/4 x 12 cabs rig had a unique and easily recognizable tonal texture. It came across live and in studio recordings.

For the fifth album (Dogman, 1994) he’d mostly retired that rig and switched to Zion guitars and Mesa amps and his tone was no longer the immediately recognizable standout it had been...but at least you could still tell it was him by his touch and phrasing.

    Brian May

Billy Gibbons (that peso pick, those .008”s!)

Mark Knopfler. Two tones, actually. The Strat tone in his Dire Strait days and the Les Paul tone in his solo work.
