Which Fender/Squier is for me? (disclaimer: not a tele)

So, after looking through my guitar collection today, I decided I need a little something to... Spice it up. I can cover almost any genre/tuning I play in with my SGs. I have my ultimate death metal guitar in my Jackson RR. But the big, glaring hole in my stable of guitars is something dedicated for my love of stoner rock and heavier alternative stuff. Artists like QOTSA, Warish, early material from the Strokes, the Hives, Dozer, etc. Fuzzed out riffage.

I realized the other day that I've never even touched a Fender/Squier six string and would like to change that. The main two that come to my mind are a strat or a jazzmaster. Being a broke college dude, I think it would be easier to track down a strat of some sort for a reasonable price but I could be wrong?

The only guitar I won't consider is a tele. I'm a bit hesitant to say this on this forum, but... I just don't like them, visually. And completely irrelevant, I don't want something in either red or green. I'm colorblind, can't see those colors.

So, what do you think I should try out?

Said this to someone the other day. You can always find a strat so go with something kookie! Try out an oddball with different construction/layout/pups.

There are used squier strats all over the place. That's the easiest option. They're also a great modding platform if you are so inclined.

There's a distinct difference between doom/stoner/sludge metal(which I play on the SGs a lot) and stoner rock. Looking for something with a bit of tonal variation, perhaps something with P90's or single coils.

If you're judging a guitar based on looks, I can't offer much advice.

I hope you find the right one for heavy alt / stoner stuff.

Not sure your budget but Squier Classic Vibe 60s Jazzmasters are about $400 new.

$400-500 is probably the best I can do right now. Liking the finish on that one.

A Johnny Marr Jaguar would do me just fine -- but not at that price.

That'll get you a used MIM Standard Strat or a new Classic Vibe. Either one will be a nice guitar.

I second that. The Squier Classic Vibe 60s Jazzmasters are very well made guitars! Just I think that the stock pickups will not bring you there... That being said, some companies do make P90s that can handle high gain very well-- Bare Knuckle's Vintage Hot and Modern series pickups come to mind. The Bare Knuckle’s will deliver a well-rounded doom / stoner rock vibe.

Liking the Classic Vibe 60's Jazzmaster a lot. Having it in sonic blue doesn't hurt either... I'll see if they have one for me to test out at the local guitar store next time I drop in.

I just quasi-impulse-ordered a Classic Vibe Mustang. It should arrive in a week or two. I'll keep you posted as to whether it is the one for me and therefore whether it's in the running to be the potential one for you.

Just sold an old Ibanez for $300 today. Pretty hyped about it, will get me most of the way to that Jazzmaster. Now I can afford the fuzz I've been wanting too. Good day in my world.
