Howdy, just checking to see what you all are playing for Christmas in church this year and specifically, which version/rendition. I'm thinking of doing a couple of tutorials looking into parts and theory for my channel that I hope would be useful to others.

CCLI is showing the following are pretty high on the list at the moment:
    1. O Come All Ye Faithful
    2. Joy to the World (including Chris Tomlin's version)
    3. Hark the Herald Angels Sing
    4. O Holy Night
    5. Silent Night
    Thanks a bunch :D

    We're working on

    Seasons (Hillsong)
A Christmas Alleluia ( Chris Tomlin)
    Hope of Israel (Chris Tomlin)
    The First Noel (Phil Wickham)
Away in a Manger (Forever Amen) (Phil Wickham)
Midnight Clear (Love Song) (Chris Tomlin)

    More Traditional :
    What Child Is This
    Silent Night
Go Tell It On the Mountain

Which channel is yours? I've probably used most of them in the past year or so.

    Come thou long expected Jesus
    O Come O Come Emanuel
Let all mortal flesh keep silent

    Last week:
    Silent Night
    O Come all ye faithful
    Little town of Bethlehem
    Adore

    This week we'll play:
    Joy to the world
Angels we have heard on high
    He shall reign forever more
    What Child is this
It came upon a midnight clear

King Of Kings And Lord Of Lords (I've adopted this as a Christmas song, I can envision the angels singing this to the shepherds.)

    Silent Night

    What Child Is This

Go Tell It On The Mountain

    from this past sunday:

    the first noel
angels we have heard on high
    hark, the herald angels sing

our pastor/worship leader loves Christmas in a big way, so we will do at least 3 carols every sunday until it's over.

    Thanks! Will check it out!

Our pastor is big on separating Advent from Christmas so we usually don't break out the Christmas songs until our big Christmas service.

As WL i do most of the song selection for our services. For the sake of my sanity, I tend to add more Christmas songs as we go through the advent season rather than wall to wall Christmas hymns for a month.

Dec 1. O come O Come Emmanuel with the progression from Ten Years After's "I'd love to Change the World" as interlude between verses.

Dec 8. Glory (Let There Be Peace) Matt Maher. This is a personal favorite! Just the Chorus from Tomlin's "Midnight Clear".

Dec15 Angels We Have Heard on High (this will serve as a gathering song congregational preceding our kid's Christmas musical.

Through Christmas Eve we'll do "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen" with the vamp from John Prine's "Saddle in the Rain". "Come Thou Long Expected Jesus", and whatever else shakes out. I've done a Christmas adaptation of Tomlin's "This is Our God" that we might pull out and Christmas Eve will include "O Holy Night". While a bit of a stretch for a congregational, people LOVE to sing this song.

From the dear old Hymnal at church:

    Joy to the World
    The First Noel
    While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks
Go Tell It On the Mountain
There’s a Song in the Air
    Away In A Manger
Angels We Have Heard On High
    Good Christian Men Rejoice
    O Little Town of Bethlehem
    Silent Night
    What Child Is This
    O Come All Ye Faithful
I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day
It Came Upon a Midnight Clear
    Hark the Herald Angels Sing
    O Holy Night
    We Three Kings
    Mary, Did You Know?

We do all the ones I know on the first 3 weeks after Thanksgiving. The 4th week we do all the "favorites" again!

Since we're talking Christmas songs. What do all you electric players do? A lot of the Christmas stuff is so piano and acoustic based that there's not many lead parts (some of the Chris Tomlin stuff has it really buried in there). I see myself doing a lot of swells and ambient tremolo picking.

Same here. Some of the contemporary arrangements have pretty solid guitar lines like Jeremy Riddle's takes on Joy to the World and Hark the Herald.

On the traditional stuff I usually play melody line in unison with violin. Sometimes just play on the refrain or just crank up the last verse.

Tomlin and some of the other contemporary songs leave plenty of room for fills and fun stuff;)

Perhaps you can quote "frosty" during
    "Hark The Herald Angels Sing"
It would at least give the organist something to think about;)

At this point we're doing whatever the WL says. She didn't like the list the pastors put together.

We did ask her to keep in Silent Night. :)

In addition to whatever music the WL picks, we will have O Holy Night and In the Bleak Midwinter as solos or duets.
