I heard the opening for New World Man this morning on the radio and thought I was listening to The Police for a minute.

The Police formed in 1977, and New World Man was released in 1982.

Watching the documentary from a few years ago Rush say they were very influenced by UK bands in the 80s - seems pretty obvious when you listen to the albums in that contexts - also the 'fashion' they began to wear at that time

I'm not about to listen to Rush to find out if that's true or not ;)

Listen to Bowie's "Jean Genie" and Sweet's "Blockbuster".

Both released on the same label around the same time and no one accused anyone of ripping anyone off other than Bo Diddley and Muddy Waters

I choose not to listen to Rush. I'd rather not listen to the Police either TBH. I'd much rather listen to the first band Copeland was in, Sonja Christina is easier on the eye than Geddy Lee or Sting too ;)

    Rush came first.

The 80's came to everyone at the same time.

As Plumber said, The Police were a big influence on Rush.

    Release dates:

The Police, Zenyatta Mondatta - Oct 3, 1980
    Rush, Moving Pictures - Feb 12, 1981
The Police, Ghost in the Machine - Oct 2, 1981
    Rush, Signals - Sep 9, 1982

"New World Man," from Signals, bears some resemblance to "Rehumanize Yourself" from Ghost and to the verse of "De Do Do Do." But really, any chorus-drenched ostinato, especially if it uses sevenths, plucked harmonics, and/or palm muting, will recall the Police from Zenyatta forward.

The first three Police albums showed leanings toward dub/ska. Trust me I heard/saw a lot of Police, my first wife was a fan.

If I'm not mistaken I think Neil Peart has been on record saying Stewart Copeland was a big influence on him.

Oh wait, you said the opening....hmmmm, ok. :D

I was a huge fan of both, I graduated HS in 1981, a saw both multiple times between 1979 and mid-80's. I was a drummer then. Copeland, Pearl, and Collins were drumming gods to me. Yes, Phil Collins. He was a great drummer.
