I recovered a 80s Peavey bass amp from a local yard sale. Basic 60.

I'd like to replace the current 12 inch factory speaker with a 10 inch aluminum speaker like the Hartke or Behringer.

Any good choices to make my purchase? Thanks.

New, only through the manufacturer (Hartke, Behringer) if they will sell them.
Those were designed for the amps not picked from stock speaker options.

Used or NOS is likely your only source.

I hated them when I played bass

I bought a used but fairly clean Hartke 410XL cab about a year and a half ago for $80. All four speakers work, and That’s probably a little less than you would spend for a single new replacement. Looking for a used but ratty 4 x 10 or 2 x 10 might be the way to go, and then cannibalize it for parts.

There was also a 120-watt “kickback” combo dating back to the late 90s with a single aluminum 12” in it. If you found one of those with a good driver, that would bolt right in.

No guarantees on how it would sound in the different enclosure, but the fact that we’re discussing a mod for a Peavey Basic 60 suggests this is either a low-buck rat amp, or you appreciate sort of dirty mid-forward rock bass tone and aren’t hunting for or expecting super smooth hi-fi bass.

I think Ashdown made some combos with blue aluminum speaker cones also, but I’m not sure how long ago or what they sounded like.

For bass cabs, the enclosure and the driver need to be matched to one another, using the driver’s Thiele/Small parameters and the cabinet alignment. Software is used to predict response before any physical work is done.

It’s not just “pick the right size driver for the hole”.

I used Hartke XL (aluminum cone) cabs for a couple years, then bought a G-K Neo 212 cab and the difference in sound quality was startling. The Hartkes that I had thought were a bright sounding speaker suddenly sounded muddy in comparison.
I bought more G-K cabs, sold most of the Hartkes and never looked back.
During the time I was using the Hartkes my 4x10 cab took a spill which killed one of the drivers. I found the exact replacement Hartke 10" at Full Compass.
