Im looking for an old style 5 hole pickguard, but I dont want to pay authentic reproduction prices. Callaham is $57. Does anyone know where I can find a good guard for less?

Darren told me this one has very little finish and has a matte finish. I was after a nitro finished guard and found one at www.angela.com. Depends on what you're after. The heavy-coated nitro '52 Bakelite guards of yesteryear, although used to be offered by Fender, are now very tough to find.

So both the guards above are the same matte finish? Does anyone know a hobbyist on TDPRI who makes a glossy guard?

Read PJ's post.

He says (link removed) are lacquered.

I have 2 of these. Both are unused and warped. :(

But they do look good and have nice edges. Callahams are worth the price since expensive usable beats inexpensive unusable every time.

Thank you for the clarification, I thought SPUD was affirming that the guard from angela was the same as the darrenriley guard.

How warped are they? Do the screw holes line up?

I think - but I'm not 100% sure - that Darren Riley sells the new Fender "Pure Vintage" version, while Angela still has stocks of the older Fender "AVRI" version.

The Callaham guard is indeed superb - I have one - but it's $57.

It would also be pretty easy to shoot a few light coats of aerosol Deft lacquer (available at Home Depot, etc.) over a matte one.

Yes I can install the guards but the right half bows up exactly where an 8 screw guard has a screw placed. The guards are super shiny and almost look warped from being heated too much.
I had a Fender relic CS bakelite guard (with the silly wear-through spot) that was less shiny and sat flat.
Get the newer Darren Riley one and hit it with lacquer would be my suggestion.

Don't they all, eventually! Even my Callaham has a judicious piece of double sided tape or two under it.

And isn't that why Fender went to 8 screws?

I have two of the matte bakelite five holers from stewmac $29.95 each and about $9 shipping.
They have stayed flat but it has only been a couple fof months, I guess time will tell on the warping.

To be fair to the pickguard manufacturers, I think the major culprit is the body wood. With temperature and humidity changes, the wood is moving all the time and a very small variance can make a perfectly fitting pickguard look a mess, especially a single-ply 5-hole one.

Here's what to do... buy an OEM fender pickguard.. check to be certain it fits correctly.... save all the packaging...

Make a template from it...

buy a couple of sheets of garolite from McMaster-Carr

make 6, 8 10... whatever....

keep the one you wanted sell the rest for.. say 25 bux... and sell the OEM guard ya used to make the template,, IF ya didn't booger it... you should clear over 200 bux.. less the OEM pickguard, 25 bux.. and the Garolite . . .20 bux... and the lacquer to clear coat 'em say 40.00 .. about another 20 for miscellaneous goodies.. and ya have some where around 50 bux to stuff in your wallet...

and the know how to start your own little income supplement endeavor..

Oh.. here ya go...

Thanks for the replies.

Ron, I saw your thread a while back and really appreciate you explaining your methodology. Ive learned a lot about basic maintenance and construction from your posts. That said, I dont have a router or drill press so Im without means currently. However, if you feel inclined to sell one of your beautiful guards....

I appreciate everyone chiming in, Im still figuring out what Im doing
