I am the King of Dogs. I don't have a dog these days but there have been plenty in my past.
Growing up my father raised beagles, lots and lots of beagles. Sometime 50-60 at a time. He had quite a few AKC field champions.
Naturally I favor beagles over all others.
Mostly I've had cats though. I've had several truly splendid cats. Yes, yes I know a cat is not a dog, but a good cat is a good friend. I've had my cat buddies bring me a whole wharf of rats, usually carefully placed such that when I swing out of bed the first thing my foot feels is, well, rat.
I miss my brother's dog who kept me company while he spent a lot of time at MD Anderson. (I miss my brother too...)
Dog, as he was know, now lives with my nephew on a farm. Never seen a happier dog!

And so, today being my wife's 61st birthday, we went and picked up a rescue puppy, 8 weeks old.

    This is Layla.

The 'triever twins (Sophia and Desmo) are no longer with us. We lost them within 8 months of each other - Sophia to cancer at age 10, then Desmo at just shy of 17. (Not a typo - seventeen) After he was gone we decided to wait until I retired to get another dog. 3 years or so.

A month later my wife called and wanted me to meet her at the Humane Society to see Ollie**, an 8 year old Border Collie/Australian Shepard mix. He wouldn't even look at me when we went to see him. Would walk away when I tried to pet him. We took him home anyway. I put him in the car and he sat there as calm as could be. Brought him inside and he was still standoff-ish.

Here he is the next day.

It took some time for him to really settle in, after a year his personality was still opening up, but he seems to be a pretty happy guy these days. Still has a few issues but some of that is just part of being a Border Collie I think.

Anyway, yeah, dogs. Gotta love 'em.

**His name wasn't Ollie at the time. His original name was some mythological character who married his own sister. Nope. Ollie it is.

I need to come see Layla. The puppy might help fill that empty spot.

    Best thread evah!!

Might as well memorialize one more of our past dogs, George. He was special (I know, they’re all special...but he left a real mark on my life).

That is really the best way for them to come to you. They never know anyone but you as their human.

Jasmine is a real attention seeker and she does love her Dad. It's mutual.

He’s making sure you don’t sneak off while he takes a nap. Great pic.

This photo of Buddy Dog is in our kitchen where everyone can see it. My wife dresses him up for Halloween and Christmas every year. CC61487B-C978-4AC9-9F22-6DD4B0887B42.jpeg

As a non-dog owner, but frequent play pal for other peoples' dogs, I've noticed my mothers' dogs (very dependent very one-person dogs) have a look that comes in two phases.

phase 1: "i'm not in love with you, where's mom"
phase 2: suddenly taking on a look of interest "wait, do you have food? Nope, back to phase 1".

My neighbor's dog's phase one is "woohoo...the guy who plays with me and lets me jump on him. And i don't think he knows I'm not supposed to eat rocks".
