I agree with you guys who think Pete Anderson's work with Dwight is the pinnacle of country tele sound

Man, how worn Don's fretboard looks! You know he played the hell out of that thing!

I think of Don Rich and Waylon for the Tele sounds.

yeah exactly. there were/are some fine modern players, arguably technically better than a lot of the OGs, but that thwappy compressed stuff is just ugly. that dwight yoakam vid is fine though.

maybe i'm just a stick in the mud, but i think the way guitars were recorded between the mid 80s and up to around 15 years ago just sucked tremendously across the board (country, rock, r&b, etc).

Welcome to the "stuck in the mud club". Some 80's tones, with their cavervous reverb and their excessive chorus, in every genere ... not my thing

I don't think any of the above mentioned really have anything on Albert Lee. I have watched that clip of him and Emmylou a bunch, man got some talent.

For the record, Roy Nichols' solo on Honky Tonk Nighttime Man is one of my favorite guitar solos all categories included: the perfect marriage of country and jazz (i.e. the definition of Western swing! … but I stray).

Merle Haggard's on this vid is also very nice!

What about this Western swing, country, jazz, blues … tele-fest by two of the very best supported by a solid rhythm section?

that's too adulterated by blues rock to be called western swing IMHO. i think that's what really bugs me about modern country, and a few other genres. people born after 1945 just can't resist the temptation to throw rock in something. and it's fine sometimes, but like, i'm specifically trying to listen to something that isn't rock. if i wanted rock i'd listen to rock.

better to aim for this sound (albeit there's only a modded tele at most here):

Sure, I did not claim it was pure Western swing. Just two amazing tele players going at it full-tilt with their broad vocabulary.

When I'm really in Western swing mood, it's usually Bob Wils with Eldon Shamblin and Junior Barnard in the band, or Jimmy Wyble…

… but we're straying far from the topic…

    Yes.

James Burton wrote the book on Tele string bands to copy pedal steel licks...

But Albert took it to the level that many copy today.

Not really the "twang" thingy; but important, none the less.

    Imo.

Solos at 1:45 (is that Buck Owens?) and 3:00.

But to me, the modern Tele sound is these two guys, here: solos at 3:30
