I was watching a local TV news station this morning when the news anchor reported that Taylor Swift had dropped a new single. WTF????? When did this kind of thing become TV newsworthy? Are pop stars paying for TV news for airtime? If so, why is this allowed? Stations must be desperate for money to even make believe that this is okay.

Lots of "local tv news" is actually content created by large media conglomerates which is then distributed to hundreds of "local news" stations. I am guessing this falls into that category.

    It is advertising.

When your local station is owned by a parent company that profits from that artist's record company selling downloads. These are almost all multi-level, cross-industry, entertainment companies at this point. It's not news, it's business.

If you don’t know she is very popular. That makes her dropping a new single news. She, also on media, told her fans to look for something at midnight last night. Yes, marketing but it seems to have worked well.

Someone on Taylor Swift's level transcends the usual structure of music news.

I bet that thing gets a billion "clicks" across all of the platforms before it's a day old.

    That's why it's "news".

    And she's cute.

Same thing when the news reports on the Pumpkin Spice Lattes going on sale as "news". Heaven help us to have some analysis of anything. If there's no B-reel video there's no news!

Hey! The PSL PSA is a "must-run!" How else am I gonna know when they are available? All radio and TV stations should be mandated to make the announcement, for the good of spice lovers everywhere.

You'll be shocked to find out they do movie and music reviews on local news as well.

If it was your job to make a full news show every day, and someone gave you a load of prewritten stories that would prop you up on a slow day, don't you think you would piggyback on it?

PR is half of most newspapers

^^^^ And for the old guys - YouTube pays her a lot of money when she drops a new song clip on their site.

    She’s waaaay beyond an influencer.

29,000,000 views in less than a day is redonkulous.

That's just PR. One of the Kartrashians did it a while back with a new perfume or something. Lame, but it's our modern world.

A least it's not the usual "bad" news that the rest of the show will cover.

The media will shovel as much material from their masters artists as they can get their hands on. If nothing new is available they make stuff up.

Now that "the news" is on basically 24 hours a day, from skabillions of outlets on a variety of media, there's an endless need for content. And yeah, 29 million hits on the video certainly demonstrates demand for that info at least.

A lot of YouTube views are faked/ bought. It also helps that they constantly "recommend" these videos to every Youtube user that signs in or loads the page. They present it as popular and the zombies take over from there.
You have to dig deep on YouTube to find the real stuff worth watching, listening to.

It won't be on the first page with the face tattoos or chicks in hot pants etc and it certainly wont pop up in recommended viewing or trending videos.

The news works in much the same way these days.

There is no such thing as "news" anymore. Can you imagine Walter Cronkite announcing that Taylor Swift "dropped" a single?
