When a speaker bites the dust, is it the same as running the amp with no load ?

I've never had a speaker fail, but I was just wondering.

If the voice coil opens, yes. If one speaker in a multi speaker cab fails, then it's probably not going to do any damage.

Sometimes. Depends on how the speaker fails. If it is catastrophically over driven the voice coil can create a dead short and/or catch fire. Usually accompanied by a burnt smell. Lots of times the voice coil will break creating an open circuit - typically where the leads go thru the cone into the voice coil structure.

Tube or solid state? I believe that SS will handle that easier. They handle non-spec loads better. Is that right?

Tubes do not like opens, SS amps do not like shorts. Many SS amps have protection circuits to keep them relatively safe. With tubes, I like to wire my output jacks with a resistor across the output, something in the line of 50-100 ohm. I also use shorting jacks so that if the speaker gets unplugged the output transformer runs into a short which is a lot better than an open.
