Shakey's brings back some great childhood memories for me. In the 1960's pizza joints were rather new, here in the South anyway. So it was a big deal to go to the pizza parlor at age 8. It was very dark because of the wood paneling and they had colored class in the doors to the kitchen. My Dad would get a beer in a mug and we'd get Cokes. What is commonplace now, was a big deal to me at 8 years old. I marveled at the cheese and red pepper shakers. All of it was an exciting experience for a kid like me.

Now, pizza toppings come up from time to time around here. As much as I love pepperoni and sausage, it makes it a bit greasy. Ham never did it for me on a pie. These days it's mushrooms, onion and black olives for me. Ever had spinach on a pizza? It's Florentine, I think. Well, it's great. To wrap it up. I will eat just about anything on a pizza, except ham and pineapple. That combo is bogus.

I'll eat pizza with any topping except pineapple, but if it's my choice I get it one of two ways:

Plain old sauce + cheese pizza. Probably my favorite.

The 'tavern special' or whatever, loaded with everything except pineapple. A couple places I frequent have a combo that just works.

Oops, that last pepperoni is from Round Table. My bad! You can tell by the darker coloring of the cheese blend, which btw is absolutely extraordinary!

A good, greasy, thin crust pepperoni works for me. Or this local heart-attack-on-a-crust concoction:

Cream & Crimson
Alfredo sauce and cheese are blanketed with a layer of oven-roasted red potato seasoned with fresh garlic and dill. Topped off with bacon, cheddar and creamy gorgonzola cheese.

I've always been very straightforward.

Pepperoni.

I'll take a ham and pineapple if that's all there is, or pepperoni and sausage too. Never could get down with any veggies on the pie, but if a little bit of a bell pepper showed up on a slice I won't complain. Good flavor, not a fan of the texture.

And speaking of great pizza, I'll give it up for the #1 chain in America (to my tastebuds). Shakey's!

How about you? What's on your pie?

Is there a Shakey's around here?
I know I can Google/search, but posting here is more fun than the internet-general...

edit: Oh, I am seeing these (Shakey's) were from way back. There was one in West Seattle where I grew up.

None in AZ to my knowledge. It's now mostly the LA and San Diego area as well as a few up north in WA or OR if I recall correctly. If there was on in AZ I'd be in my car right now driving there!

I like most everything as a topping on a pizza if someone else orders. If I order, Italian sausage, onions, black olives, & LOTS of mushrooms. Favorite chain? Papa Murphy's! I bring one home & only paid $5 for a sausage. I put sliced green onions, paper thin sliced Vidalia onions, & thin sliced Portabella & oyster mushrooms. If it's only for me, about 12 anchovy fillets with the onions & shrooms.

There's a place in Atlanta (and Milton) called Antico. Stupid good traditional pizza. my favorite is the
SAN GENNARO, w/salsiccia, dolce piccante pepper, bufala and cipolline.

Plain cheese pizza is best. If I'm going to eat one with toppings, I like Bacon Cheeseburger.....Bacon, beef, and onions.

My fave combo is sausage and ham. I'll eat a "works" with onions, mushrooms, bell peppers, etc. but I do not like olives and won't eat those. That and pineapple are about the only common toppings I can't deal with.

Canadian Bacon is the perfect pizza topping, as long as it's the thin medallions.
Italian sausage comes in a close second
Pepperoni will do if neither of these are available

I'm a single-topping guy
Some of you guys seem to want goulash on top of your pizza
