i'm a luthier so i do all my instruments from the ground up, looking for some good p90s to use build (probably a lp style body but fender style materials) saw that gfs had some at a good price but i do tend to question the quality. what other companies do you like i looked some at dimarzio, i dont have a ton of money but i do want something that is more than mediocre. i spend enough time building an instrument that i want it to sound its best

have had great experiences with Zhangbucker blues 90 and honk plus P90s - plus I think they're relatively affordable if I recall correctly.

If you want the best you will have to invest in some boutique handwound pups. Attention to detail and knowing how to give you that sound in your head is worth the money every time.

I doubt that everybody has heard every P90 so, based on personal experience, Gibson!

I have a/b'd guitars with both Seymour Duncans and Gibsons and the Gibbos won - no contest. Fuller, meatier, sweeter compared to the thin and weak sounding SD's.

Just my opinion, you understand.

I have more P90 guitars than any other. I really like '50's P90's, very consistent pups and as far as vintage stuff goes not too expensive, yet. As much as I like the '50's pups the best sounding P90 guitar I have is my '65 FBIII. All 3 pups sound amazing in that guitar. As for new production P90's I really like Sheptones. Go to www.sheptone.com and check out his sound clips, they really nail the tone and he'll do custom winds too.

This may sound crazy but I got a SX LP special style guitar some years ago.
I always loved the P-90's but the guitar was nearly unplayable.
I got a Squier Custom II thinking about move the P-90's to there since the Duncan design sound nothing like P-90's to me.
I then thought that maybe some of that sound I love on the SX may come from the pickups + woods combo so I just got the SX on a luthier for a good setup and now it's plays a lot better and sounds amazing!

100€ for the guitar + 40€ for the setup = happy!
;)

I tried a MIJ Tokai LP GT and the P-90's sounded great too.

I have a Don Grosh ElectraJet Standard with G-90s (Grosh's take on a P-90) and they are superb. I can't say enough good things about these pickups, which are available separately. Neck, neck+bridge, bridge--all three combinations are wonderful sounding either clean or overdriven. The guitar is also exceptional :-}.

I love my handmade Kent Armstrong P90. I've never actually played any vintage P90s, so I can't say how accurate it is, but it's a rich, thick pickup that still has great articulation. It's only available as a fingerrest mounted pickup for archtop guitars.

Mick Breirley's P90's. http://www.brierleyguitarpickups.com.au/

Mick is an Aussie Pickup maker - so handwound, custom made. He's a great person to deal with too.

Actually, I'm using his B90's, humbucker sized P90's, in a '97 Ephiphone Sheraton. I love them!

The Bridge pup is nice and crisp, and the Neck pickup sounds angry and ballsy. The main thing I love about them is how crystal clear they sound, unlike the old epiphone humbuckers I was using.

I'm going with the Peavey Leakesville Firenza set. They were made by Gotoh and have the nastiest, snarliest tone of any P-90 set out there. If you're looking for a polite jazz pickup, pass on these. But they do turn up on eBay from time to time.

I have the VintageVibe Charlie Christians in an Epi Dot, and it is pretty amazing. Deaf-Eddie set it up for me with series and phase options, and in-series the pickups are remarkably humbucker-sounding, while they still retain some of the jangle of a Casino in other positions. Pete makes great pickups at great prices, and his speed (and documentation) are amazing.
