I spent the first and third part of my life in Glasgow but the majority of it in a 1960s concrete jungle called Cumbernauld.
I'm now a mile or two from Rob Roy's birthplace (allegedly our barn or what's left of it was one of his regular stopping off points) and where Sir Walter Scott wrote "The Lady of the Lake".

Cumbernauld is famous for;
Craig Fergusson (formerly The Late Late Show),
Jimmy McCulloch (Wings, Thunderclap Newman),
John 'Fratelli' Lawler (The Fratellis),
Gregory's Girl (The 1980s movie),
"The worst architecture in the UK" award 3 years in a row,
and it's also where they film Outlander (Amazon Prime).

Pumpkins

Morton, IL is the pumpkin capital of the world producing some huge percentage of all world’s canned pumpkin (go ahead and check the label if you have a can sitting in your cupboard). There is a pumpkin festival every fall which is about what you’d expect. Pumpkin pancakes, pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin launching contest, largest pumpkin, and so on.

Also, our HS mascot, the “Potters,” was listed on David Letterman’s Top 10 Worst HS Mascot list one year. The Potter name comes from the factory in town that produced all sorts of ceramic creations including drain tiles to drain the marshy, low lying areas where they didn’t want pumpkins to grow anymore. I have a ceramic chicken in my kitchen from the long since decommissioned factory that my mom tells me I can never get rid if because “they don’t make those anymore.”

It was a fine place to grow up.

Well, it’s 2 towns over and they aren’t towns at all- just fields and cows when I was young- but Darryl Hall grew up there. We used to see him around at Christmas when they were churning out hit after hit. His Mon, Mrs. Hohl, was the choir director at my friend’s church.

My dad was a railroad buff; he used to talk about Altoona and the Horseshoe curve. Better yet, he digitized *his* dad's 16mm movie footage of their 1937 train trip east, including their steam locomotive going around that bend. Dad died some years back; I watched that film with my sis a couple weeks ago.

I knew his parents well when they were alive. Strangely I've never crossed paths with him despite both our fathers being drinking and working buddies. Both of us socialising in the same places and also finding out recently when reading his biog that a certain girl who left him on account of his drinking, left me for the very same reasons around 5 years later. His openess about his alcohol was one of the inspirations for me to seek help myself a decade ago.
If I ever get the chance he's on my thankyou list.

I guess it depends on what I consider to be my home town. I was born in Detroit. It's claim to fame was... what? Maybe the MC5? I was raised in Racine, WI, just south of Milwaukee. For the first three quarters of the twentieth century Racine was an industrial powerhouse, with more than 250 manufacturing plants and numerous corporate headquarters. Some of Racine's best-known products include J.I. Case farm equipment, the In-Sink-Erator (invented by my friend's grandfather), and S.C. Johnson's Raid!, Off!, Glade, Pledge, and dozens of other household brands. Those three companies still have a presence in Racine, but many other well-known companies have moved away or disappeared.

If you ask the average person in Racine what the city's claim to fame is, they will have one answer... KRINGLE!

Racine has the largest North American settlement of Danes outside of Greenland, and the city has become known for its Danish pastries. Locals all have their favorite Danish bakery, and among these are Lehmann's, Bentzen's, and O&H. These bakeries have been in existence for from 70 to almost 90 years, and will probably be around for many more decades.

One word of advice. If you are looking for Danish kringle from Racine, DO NOT buy "Racine Danish Kringle," which may be available in a store near you. It is an inferior product. O&H kringles are available at Trader Joe's (limited flavor selections), and they ship nationwide.

I used to have a supplier from SC Johnson in Racine (whose building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright) who gave those danishes to customers as Christmas presents. Wow they were so good!
