For store bought, I really like MUG. When I was a kid my Aunt used to make her own root beer that tasted so good and unique. I don’t know if it was a store bought kit or what but it was delicious!

Our next-door neighbors in the '60's used to get birch beer which was similar, kind of dark red.
Not remember the brand, but I loved it.
Later in the '80's /'90's some fast food chain can't remember which) used to have Fanta Birch Beer at their self-serve drink stations.
I would always get it, just can't remember where!

Birch beer is better than any other root beer. Little seems to escape the northeast however.

The folks next door to us ( I cited earlier) used to make me wish I lived with them- birch beer AND Charles Chips potato chips delivery ( I'm a chip fiend!)
Plus their son ( my buddy) was an only child, and he had every game and new toy on the planet!

Hah! I thought this was probably a regional thing. I was looking for both of these in this thread.

Not a root beer, but you should go "over by Jewel's an' 'at" and try Jewel brand/Signature Select Ginger Beer. Really spicy/gingery and good, and inexpensive compared to Gosling's and other craft soda ginger beers.

We used to get home made root beer from an Amish store in central PA about 30 years ago. It was amazing. And if you got one of the dusty bottles near the back it was sometimes alcoholic, which was fun.

I've reached that point -- worried about my health but not enough to cut out junk food -- that I order a *diet* root beer at A&W. All diet drinks taste horrible to me and I can only drink a fraction of it, but that's my root beer hit.

I've liked some local homemade ones better, but for store bought, +2 for Henry Weinhards.

Their ginger is my go-to for a Moscow Mule. Dripping Springs vodka and a lime. Mmmm

Barq’s is big in my area. We have Mug, IBC, and A&W available as well. But when I was growing up, nothing beat a Frostop root beer in one of their cold mugs. I believe Frostop was a local chain to South Louisiana, but I could be wrong. Think there are still a couple left in the New Orleans area. Frostop root beer with a Lotoburger and fries. Best kids meal ever.

When I was a kid we got Hires root beer extract. You added it to water, sugar and yeast, stuffed it under the sink for a few days and chilled it. Heaven.

Mainly A&W but there are other good ones. I make a root beer float occasionally. Recently
I saw a recipe for a bourbon root beer float. I may try this sometime.

Some local breweries are making outstanding Root beers these days.
Finger Lakes Brewery in Hammondsport, NY had the best I've tried so far.
