I with you on that one. I like the harder surfaces, but I have some fine guitars with rosewood, so I'm not too picky. If it plays nice, I buy it.

As a general rule, it's maple boards on Fenders but I'm certainly not opposed to a nice Strat or Tele with rosewood.

For Gibson electrics, it's rosewood every time.

Acoustics would be ebony or rosewood, depending on the guitar.

I haven't tried pao ferro, richlite, baked maple, or any other rosewood alternatives mostly because I have more traditional tastes.

Personally I don’t buy into significant sonic differences of fretboard materials, and While I notice differences in feel between rosewood, ebony, and maple I don’t really like one or the other better for feel. For me, the fretboard material matters most for aesthetics. And while not the biggest factor for me, yes aesthetics do matter. That said, maple, ebony, rosewoood, Pau Ferro etc will all look better in different schemes.

On teles, maple. On everything else, rosewood.

This was a difficult one to answer, as it didn't specify acoustic or electric guitars. On acoustics, I prefer Ebony, but Rosewood is nice as well. On fender guitars, I prefer a Maple board. However, on a Gibson style guitar, I would choose rosewood.

I like all three. That is to say....Rosewood, Ebony and Maple. So, the big three.

Ebony is my favorite. I only have one guitar with an ebony board, and it's on my Carvin SH550. I love the feel and the look, but it helps that this fretboard and neck are the best playing of any guitar I've ever played. I also like the look of abalone inlays. The beauty doesn't really show in this pic.

And there is Rick Turner's use of Formica as a fingerboard material.
