A lot of the bands I’ve seen classified as “not metal” were indeed very much considered metal at one time.

When I was a teen, bands like AC/DC, Kiss, Crue... that was metal, man. Someone mentioned the Scorpions. Absolutely metal. Van Halen? Yep.

Then the sound started evolving more... Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, etc. That stuff never appealed to me because it was just too precise and mechanical sounding. Then Pantera arrived. At least they put a little swing and swagger into it.

But in my formative years, it kind of came down to this:

    Rolling Stone: Rock
    Hit Parader: Metal

Rock is rock and roll in all it's glorious variety.

Metal is rock with extra emphasis on in your face presentation, costumes, make up, hair, tats, satanic fantasies, leather, metal studs and as much distortion as possible.

    Pointy headed SuperStrats = Metal.

Ladies and gentleman, presenting (the late) J.J. Cale, metalhead.

    Not exactly a Charvel or a Kramer. It's a Casio PG380.

Ok ive skimmed some answers and i think ive got a different take, metal as it may be percieved from black sabath to code orange i belive its the content the tone or the image, bands that fit under the folk metal metal umbrella maintain that content and image while lacking in the tone, bands that fit under the mallcore would have the tone, part of the image but lack that mythical content. finally bands like A*** C*** (fill in the blanks) would have the image and the tone but lack the content with songs like "recycling is gay".

only sometimes. that's not how power violence was named.

and often the people running the labels are the people in the bands.

ROCK is a mineral formed usually under high pressures and or volcanic stresses METAL will usually conduct electricity and depending on its purity and Molecular structure some metals will conduct electricity better than others.

Metal is when you take the ingredients for a song & pour gas on them before tossing on a lit match.

Is this even a real question? As guitar players/musicians I’d think we all know the answer without having to even ask.
