Brian Johnson of AC DC (Back in Black) was asked this question by Dan Rather and Brian's answer was vague at best. My wild guess is Metal is Rock but it is harder than hard rock. I suspect there are better ways to describe the differences. Please give it a shot.

Metal goes in the yellow bin, rock goes in the red bin.

Metal is rock taken to its most obvious and obnoxious conclusion.
I know that's not what you asked

It's kind of weird asking Brian Johnson about metal, since AC/DC are not metal, though a lot of metal can trace itself back to AC/DC. Same with Led Zeppelin. They were not metal, but a lot of what became metal came from them.

I'm no expert, but I'd guess Black Sabbath was the first you could call a metal band, full stop. Though I have no idea if the band themselves (or anyone else at the time) called it that.

    Rock
    '50's rock and roll
    Swing rock

    Country rock
    Rock jazz fusion
    New Wave
    Prog Rock
    Pop rock
    Metal
    -Heavy metal
    -Death metal
    -Speed metal

Metal Gain goes to eleven, rock goes to seven, blues goes to three.

Maybe more violent? Heavy distortion, chug chug palm muting, songs about death and gurls? Downtuned guitars? Dirty vocals?

For me it is really hot and heavy version of rock.

Musical genres were all defined by record companies and corporate radio.

    I don't care what it's called. If I like it, it's good.

Isn't it the scale it's played in? Pentatonic vs whateverthehell.

A lot of different scales are used in metal, including the minor pentatonic. Add a flat five and you're in Sabbath land.

Metal is under the umbrella of rock. All metal is rock. Someone saying, "We're rock, not metal" is classic. It's them wanting to be associated more with an r&b-based sound and attitude/image. Those who say, "We're not rock, we're metal" are simply confused.

genre's are pretty meaningless, imo. I tend to think of metal as bands descended from a portion of black sabbath's music.
