I have a tiny speaker cab and I'm considering upgrading the speaker. In your opinion, what's the best 8 inch speaker for clean/slight break up (in 8 or 16 ohm)?

I generally prefer 12 inch speakers (I think) and I like the Celestion Alnico Blue from what I've heard, though that doesn't come in 8" size.

Or does anyone know a great sounding 1 x 12" cab that I should get instead of upgrading my tiny cab? The more portable/lighter the better :)

    Thanks!

Celestion Cream for a 12 inch Alnico

Look at the Tone Tubby Humboldt Ceramic

    Tone Tubby Humboldt Alnico

Have Tim at TRM Cabs build you a cabinet.

Have him build an EV cabinet with Ports, and 3 piece back, and take 1 or 2 panels off, and leave the Ports Open for the Cream.

Cream is No Good using the Ports Only, but is great with Semi Open Back, and Open Ports.

I had him use use. 3/4 Ply/Black Tolex.

The blackbird speaker than blackstar uses in their 4x8 cab is pretty awesome and versatile. I've seen a few videos, but never had hands on use with them unfortunately.

I was looking for a bright speaker to fix the warm "woolly" sound of my highly modded Epi VJ, and chose this:

    https://www.jensentone.com/vintage_ceramic/c8r

It is much better than the original for the kind of sound I was looking for

I'd suggest the Jensen C8R as well. I recently put one in my Gibson GA5 (Les Paul Jr) amp. The GA5 is a dark amp to begin with & the Jensen brightened it right up.

Or if you are interested in upgrading to a 12" cabinet, go over to Avatar & they can build one for you with their selection of speakers or use your own.

I think you'll find a 1x12 more useful down the road.

Jensen Mod 8 is a great speaker. Totally love mine in my Peavey Rage 108. Great projection and thumping bottoms for a little speaker. It happens to be pretty affordable too.

recently put a celestion 8-15 in a champ and must admit I was pretty surprized at how good it sounds cheap too.

I think the Eminence 820H is probably pretty good.
8" speakers scare me, and I think I scare them.

I have a cab with a Weber Blue Pup 8" that i really like. Kind of gets that old Joe Walsh vibe.

Really depends on the amp & application. Alnico vs.ceramic,etc.
I really love the WGS G8C in my BFVC!

I am glad to hear this. I tried ordering a pair of 12s right after Ted passed away. At that point Weber seemed to be just two guys with cell phones who kept referring to the other.
I did finally get my speakers ordered and they are great.

What's the best 8" guitar speaker?

There can be no consensus of opinion without knowing which color guitar you play.

If you like the Alnico Blue type speakers, then the Weber Alnico Blue Pup 8 might be just the speaker you are after. I use Weber more than any other speaker manufacturer. I have the Alnico Signatures in 8", 10" and 12" and the 10" Alnico Blue Pup and 12" Alnico Blue Dog. I'm looking at putting the Alnico Blue Pup 8 in my Champ, or make a 1 X 8" cab.

The very best 8" speaker you can buy without a doubt is an Eminence 820H! IMO.
