What's something from the Good Ole Days that wasn't really so good?

For me, it's a family tradition.

When my dad was a kid he realized that if he bought a Coke, all his buddies would try to bum a sip off him and he'd be left with half a Coke. If he bought a Moxie, he got the whole damn thing to himself. When I was a kid I saw my dad drinking it, so I decided I needed to drink it too (I did basically the same thing with beer a few years later). You do develop a taste for it... eventually.

I was outside LL Bean in Freeport, Maine a few years ago, and my wife wanted an ice cream cone from a sidewalk snack cart. They had soda too, and one of the cans they displayed was Moxie. I ordered one with the ice cream, and the high school girl working the cart looked at me like I was a dumb tourist and said, "oh, we don't really have that- no one actually drinks it."

Leather soccer balls that quadrupled their weight when wet and the accompanying leather soccer boots with nailed on studs. As the studs wore down the nails pushed further and further through the soles and eventaully into your feet. Coal fires and the resulting London smog; old cars in winter with the wind whistling through the holes in the floor where the pedals were; crash gearboxes; ex-army barbers; leather soled shoes with hob nails; the smell of wet woollen overcoats.

Definitely and even though it gets some bad press, heath and safety in the workplace. I begin my work life in a rubber factory. One department used a lot of solvent with little air extraction. I have gone home days so stoned I could not remember what day it was. We used to make those vertical stip curtains for outside doors that you could drive through. Part of the process had to be built two laying under the bonding machine while glue was poured between two layers of rubber and fabric. Those under the machine had to keep the fabric stretched for a good bond, but were then so out of it they were just taken home.
    Yeah the good old 1970's

    Bullies.

And fights at concerts. Not something I was involved in, but still not a pleasant happening.

Vinyl records. Sounded like rubbish unless you had a great sound system.

Concerts were not that good. They were often poorly organized. The sound systems were not very good. Bands sometimes didn't show. Security was sporadic. Festival seating is a drag. Bathrooms always inadequate.

Having to keep a steady supply of pocket change on hand or in your vehicle to use a pay phone. Though having to find a pay phone wasn’t too hard—any gas station, shopping center, 7-11 or restaurant tended to have them. Having to keep an actual physical list of people’s phone numbers, though the more frequently you called someone the better the chances were that you had the number memorized.

Yes - I remember the Robinson Crusoe series; good music in it too. Aaah - 'Tales From Europe'. Great stuff, and much better than the fiction of today.
