Back to basics on the balcony.

Man, every fret I was fretting about all the noise I was making, worried about disturbing the entire apartment complex. Can't wait to have my own shop again!

Finally got around to shaping the neck for my graduation gift to myself.

Not on my bench, but I've returned (no pun intended) to my wood lathe. I made a Bradford Pear Urn yesterday. It has about 60 cubic inch capacity (or enough space for a medium size dog's ashes) pear-urn.jpg .
It measures about 5" diameter x 12" tall.

And I've been working on a large Hickory Salad Bowl. The bowl is rough turned and weighed about 7 pounds with 20% MC, and after a week of sitting in a paper grocery sack with wet shavings it's down to about 12% MC. I'll check it again today after work.
hickory outside rough.jpg hickory inside rough.jpeg.jpg

It's about 10.5" diameter with really thick walls to let it slow dry.

Yeah! I thinned the cheeks out quite a bit and then sharped it nice and good. It worked alright for taking out bulk material, but not as well as I had hoped. Oh well, at least my hatchet is sharp now...

Ohhh! I am super excited about an amp build. Jelle Welagen is building me a 50watt Overdrive Special at the moment. Wish I could share all the pics but this 1 is the only photo I am allowed to share. He holds all the details very close. We talked a lot about what flavor ODS I was looking for. I shared a lot of my recordings with him and critically talked tone. It’s been an incredibly fun process and very much a bright spot through this crazy time we are living through. This is the voicing we ended up settling on in Jelle’s own words...
“Its a copy of a highly tuned late 80s ODS. Dumble would usually use his standard recipe for a given era. Sometimes he would tune every part of a highly custom one. This is based on one of those.” Can’t wait... BB34381F-B4AC-4D01-90C6-952E753B0B2F.jpeg

New neck template based on a ‘59 Esquire that came through the shop. Back to the basics here with these white guard replicas. You can see some bridges taking form as well. CFFC2063-EEC8-44D6-88FB-CB1E4E5612A3.jpeg

Cool stuff Mark. Do you stamp those bridges yourself?

Meanwhile, my first quarantine guitar is done...

Social distanced at the saw mill today. Sliced up a nasty old Claro Walnut stump. 23AE098B-80D0-4976-834F-A44CBC6E60A6.jpeg 16920514-953C-491C-9E7C-85CBF415A535.jpeg 4C660232-9DEC-4C32-A127-912163541BD0.jpeg 22ACC349-F342-4F68-A349-6F1EC7F87943.jpeg F0E3695E-104D-4801-B243-D7E416C90FA2.jpeg

AF8A4906-9FE3-4B75-94E2-6BD9164AE983.jpeg No major projects today, but I did get some parts in that have been on order for awhile. I put a clear pickguard on my Stingray. It shows the burst a lot better than the big, ugly black splotch of a pickguard that was there. I’ve wanted an ashtray for my ‘52 AVRI since I bought it. That came in, too.

The wandoo is heavy, hard, and very tight grained...the figure on this bit is lovely, will come up a treat with a finish, probably tru oil..

Wow!!!! That is some grain pattern there Mark! I can see at least one maybe two ancient Chinese Dragons side by side in that piece!!! I'd reckon you could just sand and polish that face cut and hang it on the wall!!!

Might be interesting if it was slabbed what visuals you could get...............but sometimes the pix just disappear!

I once milled some camphor laurel timber for a jewellery box and a picture of an old style (think Mary!) lady sitting on a rock looking directly into the camera just appeared. It was almost photographic!!

I tried to smooth it out to use it and after a very light pass through the drum sander she was gone! :(

    Them's the breaks!!
