Could be Iroko as well, nice wood!
if it would be iroko, work with dust masks when routing, sanding, and all that kind of work.
the dust can give you nasty irritation, and in my case, chronic al nose infection.
i think it turns out grey to over the time when using as fence wood.

I'd do short scale,30,31 or 32". I'm just finishing up a full scale (at customers insistence) that will be a beast and I even expanded the body to LP dimensions 😳

Cool! I've never played a short scale bass before but I prefer my shorter scale 24.75" Cyclone to my offset Tele's 25.5". I'm on the hunt for a nice Jaguar to get an even shorter 24" scale length to try out.

A full scale with a huge body? That thing is going to weigh a ton! What wood did you use? Hopefully some light like basswood so your customer doesn't get back problems 😆

I swapped the tort pickguard on my DIY (painted and assembled, I haven’t graduated to making from scratch yet) P-Bass and I think it looks a lot better. I’m of the opinion, as a lot of others are, that tort belongs with dark fretboards and just doesn’t look quite right with maple. What do you all think? Sorry for the crappy lighting. It's a fairly subtle change but the tort was just too busy IMO since I have the block inlays on the neck.

There's always one slightly off. How do you guys get the buggers in a straight line? I punch the centre holes against a straight metal rule and use brad point bits but in over 10 builds I've never got them straight. It's really annoying. Still it's coming along

It is really critical if you use three or six on a plate tuners. Back when I had a machine shop available I just made up some drilling jigs for the tuners I wanted to use

It’s not Iroko. It’s not heavy enough, too easy to cut, and didn’t smell bad when I cut it.

I also heard, that the British railroad tracks used solid rosewood for the rail supports, which they imported cheaper from India, than to cut down and mill their local oak. Not sure if that is true, but just the thought is intriguing.
We call them “sleepers” in the UK. Many years ago I found one in a wood pile (not mine). Unfortunately it had decayed too far to be worth keeping.

It doesn't LOOK huge which is kinda the point. I used a template I made for my Tele 12 string which actually had LP hips and overall dimensions, not that anyone noticed lol 😂.

But is Eastern Red Cedar,1.75" thick and not hollow but the sucker DOES balance 😉

The coffee table build got some traction today. This is a live-edge solid slab of canary, 18" x 36" x 1.25" thick.

I glued pear veneer into the fret slots of two reject PRS fretboards, routed a recess for them down the middle of the slab, and glued 'em in end to end. The birds are paua abalone but they are hazy due to being sanded. They will pop back to life when the sealer goes on.

Everything is sanded to 320, and tomorrow I'll start the sealing process using clear Danish oil. I think I'm going to use 12" steel hairpin legs for this build. It will be the only one like it in the universe.

@StoneH ^^^Yes. That very well could be cherry.

Thanks! It all makes sense now.

My Dad used cherry and walnut a lot. There were a couple of planks of planed wood mixed in with a ton of rough-sawn wood. I know the rough-sawn is walnut, and I was surprised at the color when I oiled my bench slats. I hope I have some more cherry, or I will have a "brown" bench and a "red" bench.

New maple drop top came in while I was at work today. Got it for a great price and it's huge. Which is good because it's going onto this body. I'm currently thicknessing it to around 1 1/2" and then hollowing out some of it since it weighs a ton. So it's going to be a Les Paul inspired Kramer Voyager shaped thing that's chambered with cream binding and chrome hardware.

Just finished this partscaster tribute to 62. First tele 'build' (more like assembled). Antiquity Broadcaster bridge pup and Antiquity II in the neck. Can't believe how great it sounds. Am going to put on a rosewood neck; can't decide which one...
