I would say, "Being able to see your *&^%$!!! interface."

I need a new 2-channel interface. I gave my spare Scarlett 2i2 to a friend last year. My daughter came home from college with a couple of mixing/mastering projects to finish in order to graduate, reclaimed the 2i4 I've been using, and expressed her intent to take it with her when she moves to her own apartment this summer.

The easy thing would be just to buy myself a 2i2 Gen 3. It's cheap, I already have the drivers installed, the Scarletts have never given me a bit of trouble, and I've always been satisfied with the sound I get from them. But... I can't see the damned thing. With its vertical front panel, it sits on the shelf between my monitors, in a place where my bifocals just won't go. The black-on-black controls make it even worse. It's like trying to control Hotblack Desiato & Disaster Area's stunt ship.

So, I'm thinking of buying an SSL2 instead. I'm no fan of the "SSL sound". (Not that I've actually experienced it, but all the producers I admire avoided SSL in favor of classics like Neve or Helios.) But, the SSL2 has those nice bright colors and that sloped enclosure. I'll be able to sit it on the desktop, right there, in the lower half of my bifocals. It's $60 more, but being able to see it is a plus, right?

    Practice, but that's overrated...

Look into the Audient series for upgraded sonics and a top-down view that should be easier. I have a 3rd gen 18i20 but it's mounted 4" off the table in a rack so everything's easy to see.

Probably not at all what you want or need, but have you thought about using something like a PodGO or similar floor units? they have very good visible displays and work very well as interfaces.

I wouldn't worry too much about the SSL sound for a couple of reasons.

    1) some very smart folks in Oxford worked very hard to make pres that were as detailed and clean as possible. SSL pres weren't/aren't really known for their sound coloration

    2) any SSL sound really came mostly from the per channel gate/compressors and the bus compressor, none of which are included in this interface.

SSL became popular because of the mix automation and recall that was unique to them at the time (along with gates and comps on every channel) rather than having a transformer sound like Neve etc..The old 4K series desks with a floppy disk and 8 bit CRT monitor to record the automation seems really clunky now, but they are still awesome to mix on.

If SSL have come up with a way to pack all of the circuitry and corresponding sound of a $70,000 console into a $200 interface, that would be news indeed, so please keep us posted :p

P.S. 10 out of 10 for the Douglas Adam's reference.
