While in the midst of being reassigned in my professional duties last summer due to the unspeakable, a female coworker tried to give me instructions on how to wash a truck. It always started with "what you ought to do is ____". I am 57 years old. I know how to wash a truck, and have well over 100k miles driving commercial vehicles. Thanx for the advice...

It's called sharing one's opinion. Seems like a core purpose of this sort of venue to me.

Some times giving an opinion on discussion pages can get you banned because some overly sensitive wimp gets offended when you use words like scholksengruber.

That would have made me angry enough to shut her down verbally. Condescension crawls all over my nerves.

I raised 2 sons. I was a Scout leader for almost a decade. I've been married for 29 years.

    I want 2 t-shirts - one that reads:

    NOBODY LISTENS TO ME

    and another that reads:

DAD: PART ATM, PART PACK ANIMAL

As for this forum, I really value the opinions on gear and parts and techniques. I also enjoy the humor and trivia. And even though we have more communication technology than ever these days, it's nice to actually CONNECT with people.

I find that if your advice is not a direct correlation of what's in their brain, ... they .... just .... don't .... listen.

If I listened to anyone's advice I would have gone out of business a long time ago.

For me, “advice” is a spectrum. On one end is, “This is how it’s done . . . if you don’t do this, you will fail”. On the other end is, “There are a dozen ways to do it, this is how I like to do it”. The likelihood of me taking advice goes from 100% to 0% accordingly.

Yeah, I'd definitely suggest you follow your instincts...

No, not that one.they crack across the back and fail prematurely.
Look for the ones with the metal reinforcement.

I am inclined to invert that. But thats just me.

All seriousness aside, I notice that those who ask, often either already know what I am going to say, or already know we are pretty much like- minded.
The others look to their own tribe for affirmation.

The spectrum isn't the attitude of person giving advice; in that case I would agree.

I mean the the advice on one end is almost carved in stone: "Don't put diesel in a gas tank", and the other end involves variables: "You can use regular, mid-grade, or premium".

Indeed. As I've mentioned before, my mother-in-law's favourite was to start a sentence is "You know what you should do? ..."

I've learned to nod and ignore it.
